..ok, so sprayed with degreaser, cleaned thoroughly, dried, and went out for a blast.

Got back, and the investigation has turned to the right side of the bike..

..there's oil on the main external oilway from the oil tank to the right front of the engine (the 'shiny pipe') and some spots above this on the end of an overflow pipe but as its from the carbs, its not that. So working upwards from there, theres no oil coming out from any of the gaskets on the oil tank (bottom one or middle one) and no oil on the small diameter external oilway that runs from one side to the other at the back of the cylinders, but there is oil on the oil filler pipe.

So, I'm pretty sure I've worked out what it is ................................. but I'm not saying!!

.. but theres a clue in the photo!! :D
Lost something have you??

Actually, I'm probably doing myself down a bit here, I'm not quite that big a donut!

The leak was from the oil filler pipe but not because the cap was missing, but because the O ring rubber seal had come off it. That and a sight chip in the cap rim itself meant oil was coming out, as you can see in the photo, then running/splashing over other bits, especially running through to the left side of the bike when it was on its sidestand.

It`s like blood in saliva,a little goes a long way,oil can run all over the place especially when warm.

Well, thanks for your help everyone, and yep, lucky outcome: no engine stripping needed! But a missing rubber O ring from the filler cap is not that obvious!
