After changing to semi-synthetic oil (Valvoline) my trx hardly use any oil during the season.

IMO, anything which has the minimum rating required as per the manual and change it (and the filter) at the recommended interval. Esp. at 3,000 miles a year, I suspect the bike will be a pile of rust and we'll have run out of oil before your choice of lubricant will make any difference. No oil or old oil might conceivably cause a problem though.

I typically use halfords synthetic. Works fine, not too expensive, comes in the squirty bottle for top ups on the move. Well, not actually while moving but you get the idea.
