Tyre shortage.

Post by DOBBO » Wed Sep 17, 2008 1:56 pm

Went to replace my michelin pilot road the other day, rang around all the local bike shops and nobody had any. They all said having problems with the michelin distributers, finally got hold of the last 160 rear pilot power in Newcastle not what i wanted but it was the closest i could get . Looking around the bike shops nobody seems to stock 160 rear tyres anymore.
Is the rear rim size on the trx now obsalete and will rear tyres become harder to obtain? There were plenty of 180 size tyres in stock. :(

I'm having the same problem with track tyres.
160/60 and 120/60 tyres for track use are becoming harder and harder to get by and prices are seriously on the increase...
So I've now ordered pirelli diablo rosso's instead of the usual Dunlop GP racers. :(

The size isn't obselete, it's just inevitable that they will become a bit harder to find as all new sporty bikes end up using 180+ section tyres. There's still a huge market for 160 tyres for older bikes, so the supply is going to continue for the foreseeable future.

If you're having difficulty finding a 160, you can always go for a 170. Currently using a 170/60 Conti Road Attack on the back with no trouble.

Never ever had a problem sourcing 160s. Currently on a set of Pilot Powers that are lasting quite well, though getting a tad ragged. Had Metzelers in the past (Z1 fr, Z4 rr & Sportec M1s =D> ), might go for a set of Pirelli Diablo Stradas next, or Metz Z6 Roadtecs - and yes I know they're both made by the same company

I've never had any problems sourcing 160s.

They are still standard fitment on a lot of bikes inc. supermotos. Race tyres is even easier as they are used by 400s, 250s, and mini twins etc.

Ive never had a problem either till now, 160 tyres seem to have dried up in Newcastle.
The local bike shops could not be restocked with michelins for some reason. Wombat how many kays did you get from the rear pilot power ?

Bought the rear PP in Sept last year at 59,000. Now at 67,000 and there's prob another 3,000 in it.
BUT the front PP is really shagged and prob 2 years old, so I'll get a new front and rear next month.

Having said that, I am still waiting for a 160 PP to come in at the local bike shop. They have a 120/60 front in stock, no probs. They ordered the rear on Tuesday and its now Thursday evening and still no show. Maybe tomorrow they said. And I want to go on the Rockers Ride on Sunday. What's the bet I end up not going, because of the tyre?

 Its green, and I was commenting on having 180 on mine now, thinking that the new Kwak would have the same size, bit of a surprise when i saw the tyre size. It appears to be developed from the racer but with high bars and bigger cut out in fairing to allow for the bars, and like mine doesnt tell you what it is. Oh and she doesnt know either, they were doing a deal on it and her ZZR600 had died.

There was a 3 week wait for the rear Pilot Power, so I bought a set of Metzeler Sportec M3s instead.
Put them on this morning and will scrub them in this afternoon. Tell you what they are a quieter tyre than the Michelins, the Pilot Powers used to howl.

Cos it probably looked like every other over-styled, underslung exhaust, upside down brakes, radial shock, wavy seat, pointy, generic IL4, fuel injected, Japanese late-model bike, except it was green so he knew it was a Kwak

Wombat you could be the resident site tyre tester. Isnt it frustrating when you wear out the tyres you have to have a replacment straight away and the bike shops dont have any in stock. 8-[ Then it usually starts to rain.
