Alternative rear caliper options

Hello all

Looking to lose some weight where possible from my track TRX this winter.

Had a look thru search but could not find much other than alternative Yamaha calipers that fit the existing carrier.

Has anyone fitted a much smaller (moped/125?) caliper even if I need to make up a bespoke carrier?

I never touch the rear brake now anyway but not sure I can get rid of the thing completely (not for road use). Might still be useful in the wet.

Any suggestions or recommendations for parts to use would help. A neat little Brembo type unit would look the part.

Thanks

Kayla sells a nice aluminium rear disc for race use only, looks good. :D

It's not ally, it's 4mm stainless, but thanks for the pointer :D

We've just made a 3mm thick, 210mm diameter disc to fit the TRX850 wheel and swingarm, to be used with a Brembo front caliper from a Piaggio Typhoon on a bracket I designed a while ago. The disc weighs around 300g and uses three bolts instead of six. I had a photo of one we did for my last SZR660 (which had a TRX wheel and swingarm fitted) but I can't find it now. I've got one to do for my FZR400 track bike in the next few days so I'll get a pic then if you're interested.

Thanks Kayla

More pics would help esp if they include the caliper carrier (which I am assuming you could supply?). What torque arm does it use?

I have a YZF 5.5" rear rim + swingarm but am sure the disc is the same as the TRX. Caliper carrier on YZF is also the same apart from larger dia spindle so the mod'd carrier for a TRX I hope can be bored to suit but will otherwise fit.

Any idea what the weight of the stock disc is compared against 300g?

I can whip it off and weigh it myself if not.

I'll look out for a possible caliper.

Thanks for the useful info.

This is the caliper-

There are loads of the (usually) available.

I don't know what the standard TRX disc weighs but the standard FZR400 210mm dia/5mm thick disc weighs around 800g and our FZR400 race disc weighs around 330g. Given that the TRX disc is 245mm diameter and 5mm thick I'd imagine it'd be close to 1000g for a standard disc.

I'm not sure that I've understood correctly: there it is no alternative to the original caliper for the original rear disk?
Nothing like the gold spot swap in for the front?
I do use the rear quite a bit and I'm looking for a street setup.
