Wind noise

Hello TRX gurus,

Given I've had my TRX back on the road for some weeks now and the majority of the riding I've been doing is my daily 130km (65km each way, I'm not that dedicated to my job) commute on the highway I've found that there's one thing I don't like about the bike and that's the wind noise at 100km/h. It's so loud that I can't hear the engine over it and I'm starting to get worried that it might damage my hearing. I used to ride a naked bike (Honda CB400) and don't remember it being this bad.

My questions are:

1) Is this normal for a TRX? I'm 184cm tall (bang on 6 foot for those in the UK) and it seems that's the perfect height for my head to be right in the slipstream deflecting up off the front screen as I get some buffeting when I turn my head. However lying down on the tank as flat as I can doesn't seem to improve matters.

2) Could it be my helmet? I've got a Shoei TZ-X and closing all the vents doesn't make a difference to the noise. Does anybody else have this helmet and, if so, do you get the same issue? My previous helmet was an AGV and I don't remember it being as noisey but it got written off with the CB400 so I can't compare. They don't let you take helmets out for a test ride and I don't really have the dosh to buy a new one anyways especially after resurrecting the TRX so if the consensus is that the helmet is the issue then I'll have to get ear plugs.

3) Would a fancy aftermarket screen (e.g. a double bubble from Eagle Screens) make a difference? Does anybody have any experience with these? Given that the TRX doesn't have a massive screen to work with I'm skeptical that they would make a noticeable difference and again I don't have the money to just buy one to find out so any input would be appreciated.

I have one Rex with a double bubble, one with the OEM screen, and a tdm 9er with an MRA Tour screen and I wear a TZ-X
When I close the visor and click the lever to the lock position, and close the chin vent it quietens down considerably.
My previous lid was a shark RSI which was terrible for wind noise.
weird tho, Red Rex is noisier than Miss Blackie, but miss B has loud Yoshi's

Hi Browney,

yes it is air spilling off the fairing screen and yes, it is loud enough to damage your hearing. I added a double-bubble and this helped, but it's still ferkin loud. My other two fairinged bikes do not give me this trouble and when I stand up on the pegs or sit bolt upright the noise drops off substantially. Ear plugs are mandatory to avoid hearing damage.

If you are traveling every day I would wear plugs. Its not the loud noise but the constant noise that damages your hearing, I know some people try ear bids as they passively seal the ear.

Try a Schuberth Or just as effective is a lid like the Arai Viper with the neck roll and chin deflector gizmo

Shoei make a neck roll for the tz-x and a chin curtain .

At the same hight approx as you, I found a dubble bubble screen a must.
Standard screen is like it is for looks or tiny japanese people only.
Cheapest option is earplugs, unless u are due a new lid anyway.

I'm 6'4" & wind noise is horrendous at motorway speeds, so bad that I have to wear a scarf to stop the noise entering under the back of my helmet.

It's the worst I've ever had it on a bike, including nakeds/half faired/bikini faired etc. Mine doesn't have a double bubble, more a hideous formed screen that angles the air upwards. I thought it was the lack of fairing in-fill panels chanelling the air upwards under your chin that was causing it.

If I forget to put my scarf on, it's deafening (nearly as loud as a running APU!), if I wear my scarf, I get the p1ss taken out of me!

Not much I can do I think. It's a shame, because the bike is very good. It just seems out of it's element on the motorway?

I found a balaclava helped even though its very thin, with ear plugs I had a nice quite ride up to 77mph today.

. That's funny Wind noise from a Browney.. I'd suggest to lay off the raw veggies... or maybe use the earplugs in your nose
