Head Porters
Who is the best UK based person to do my new head with my new valves when I get them. I want the best I can get I will be using reprofiled cams too.
I know Sanddune51 offered to do a free port job but what figures do you have to back this port job up please? Im looking for a reliable 100bhp from my engine I know its possible with modern techniques.

My bike maybe a dinosaur but it still has some bite & has a mighty roar.

Yeah, i´m currently at 100,2HP. Although with 900cc wiseco pistons (less comp than JE878).Kenny wrote:Who is the best UK based person to do my new head with my new valves when I get them. I want the best I can get I will be using reprofiled cams too.

Look for those who done it for MANY years, they know what work and not. The guy who did mine was an old gent who ported heads for 40 years and specialized on singles and twins. If one cannot find those nerds a firm with a flowbench should be used so they can back the job up with numbers.
Just the other day i found a forum link wich listed companies in UK, DK and SE who flowes heads...did not save it but if i found it....
(maybe flowbench uk + sweden)

Re: Head Porters
You can get 900 barrels & piston easily installed on an 850 engine base... A few guys on the French TRX forum have done so but I don't know what work is involved here!Kenny wrote:I didnt know you could get the std trx to 900cc

Re: Head Porters
Hi, maybe i can share my experiences with this subject here , so far I've bin doing this myself with the help and advice of some very knowledgeable people (whit flow benches
) who all say that the (inlet) port shape should not be altered to much but just take away the rough edges and smooth out the surface .
My bike makes 106 hp (at the backwheel) now with veetwo cams JE pistons and keihin flatslides and a has nice powercurve , (PS. if you are going to race your bike fit stronger connecting rods)
(i hope my English typing makes any sense here

Re: Head Porters
That corresponds with the comments made by the portman of my head, he said that yamaha actually made such a good job there where not much to do on the inlets....exhausts was a different story. Just by upwelding them i got a MUCH higher exhaust note...and i´ve read up on that happens to a lot of high velocity ported heads. Super sonic bangs...

Was lead to this comment by your link to conrod upgrades.
Can I ask you to explain what mods you did to the exhaust ports on the TRX head? My head has no work so far but I would like to know what you had done if you are will ing to share the knowledge??
Were the exhaust ports reshaped and enlarged...............were the valve guides cut back within the port? I notice from the image in that link that the inlet guides appear not to have been touched.
Thanks in advance
Phil

Re: Head Porters
I would be looking for a porter that had known results with 5 valve heads. When 5 valvers first arrived on the superbike racing scene, many porters had problems getting horsepower. The smarter guys realized that the 5 valve head required a slightly different approach than 2 or 4 valve heads and raw flow figures were less important than the way the mixture entered and circulated in the cylinder. The yamaha 5 valve is characterized as a low velocity tumble flow head. I would be looking for a porter that had good results at a national or international level from a few years ago when Yamaha 5 valvers were at the peak of their development.

Re: Head Porters
The very best cylinder head modifiers usually go completely under the radar.
They have absolutely no need to advertise their services and rely on repeat work and personal recommendation.
I'm very sceptical of those that do advertise. To many people are happy to take money for ill concieved or unneccessary work.No-one cares more about my cylinder head than I do,Period.
I still believe I can produce very worthwhile results doing this work myself for myself. It is very satisfying work. O.K. I freely admit I will not produce the very best race winning head, but then again I will be able to put my cash towards perhaps a slipper clutch or lightweight wheels.
Quite a lot of people on the forum claim to run ported/flowed heads but I never see names mentioned. Personal recommendation would seem to be the best route to follow. Would anyone like like to heap praise on their cylinder head man and recommend him personally or his company name?
Why is there very often an air of secrecy around telling others who did the work on your bike? Surely there can be no legal implications if you are recommending them?
Mark.
