Rear 5.5 inch rim...

Post by trixynut » Mon Dec 04, 2006 4:41 pm

Will a larger rear rim, say 5.5 inch, with a 180 section tyre on it fit in the standard swing arm, or will it rub?

Plenty of room for the 5.50 180. The YZF750 wheel bolts on with bearings sized to the hub / TRX axle shaft and proper spacers (you can use the TRX cush drive hub). You will also need to either stack your countershaft sprocket (I used a thinner, aftermarket job), flip the rear sprocket around or have some milled off the hub for a 3 mm offset change in chain line.

Does the original TRX brake disc fit on the YZF wheel? And how bout the caliper, does it line up properly?

Yes, same disk. I can't remember offhand how I modded my spacers but I use the stock carrier and rear caliper (to be changed in the future for something that doesn't weigh 10kg...).

Funny you should talk about 180 rears. When I brought mine second hand it had a 180 fitted to the standard rim . It was only when I was doing a day at P Island and met anotherTRX rider that I found out 160 was standard . I use 160 to 170 and it is easier to turn. I know 180 has more tyre options but for basic standard bike I wouldn't go past present tyres . 180's look fat thats why some go for them , those that do track days may get better value with 180's but on the road maybe not . I see most tyres are replaced with the centre bald and the sides like new WHAT A WASTE

Bob,

One of the TRX's I bought for parts had a 170/55 or maybe 170/60 rear on a standard rim, which seem to fit fine.

Trouble with a 180 on the standard 5" rim is the tyre must have to deform from it's intended shape to fit the narrower rim?

Dave.

You won't get any use out of a 180 on a 5" rim, at least not it's potential advantages. And yes, a standard size is fine for the street. But if you spend much time on the track, you will find a better selection of tires and traction like you've never experienced. Not only that, but it gives you a few extra millimeters of ground clearance when banked over.
