Braking mods

Currently running gold spots, stock (recently rebuilt) front M/C, Galfer Wave Rotors (Steel, not stainless),HEL Braided lines & Metal Gear sintered pads.

Brake power is fine, but really lacks feel to the point where I very nearly locked the front a couple of times under heavy braking at a trackday. That's not a big deal, apart from he fact I couldn't feel it coming on, the chirping front wheel was the first give away. (Or is that pretty normal? ISTR having a lot more feel & progression under brakes with the old calipers, but not as much power)

I intend to upgrade to a radial MC from a late model R6 (16mm), but in my research, I've read that sintered pads shouldn't be used with steel discs, only stainless steel discs, anyone know anything about that?

I'm happy to give non sintered pads a go if they'll give me better feel, I only got the sintered because I assumed they would be better...

I'm very happy with braking power & will gladly trade a bit off for some more feel.

i can highly recommend the 04-06 R6 14mm master cylinder.

i have posted threads regarding these.
the feel comes back.
you get that 'squeezability' back which is lost with the std 5/8 master and monobloc calipers.
pads are horses for courses . . . for track or for street and easily swapped with the calipers on.
cheers

Yeah, I have my eye on the same thing, just in radial ;) Unless I can find one of those for under $50...

Unfortunately the stock TRX mc is not a good match for 'blue spots' and does result in the brakes working like an 'on off switch'

14mm mc changes this

or buy some stickier tyres ;)

the challenge I had on track was keeping the back wheel on the ground

Dunlop Q2's, they're pretty sticky already :D

Do you mean the 16mm M/C? Now I'm confused again, I've been looking for 16mm radial M/C...

Is 16mm radial different to 16mm axial?

I've been looking at late model Yamaha M/C, in radial 16mm, like the stock yamaha/brembo items, will these be any good or do I need 14mm?

:-s

So, according to the Nissin site:
Two piston sizes are available depending on requirements; the 19x18mm units replace the 5/8" OE size and the 17x18mm replace the 14mm OE sizes.

Seems legit.

So 16mm x 18mm in a Radial M/C should give good feel.

I'd agree with the comments so far but also would not use sintered pads for road/occasional track use. They are too harsh, you just dont need them.

Or have power and feel plus good looks to boot :D
Had to empty my wallet some, but definitely some of the best $$$ spent on my bike in my humble opinion.

Just be very wary about buying from anywhere other than approved dealers - there are lots of moody copies that are potentialy dangerous (as in life threatening!)

=D> I second that, some VERY nasty Brembo (Thai) copies around.

You know that these are fitted as standard to the later model ducati`s. I bought a pair off a wrecked 848 for my last Cafe racer build and they were farrrrrrrrrrr cheaper than buying the Brembo packaged item.

He does! =D>

Anyway ladyboy`s aside, that`s the way to go to get quality parts like those ex duke m/c`s Stank as long as the breakers isn`t like far too many over here now and trying to sell salvaged stuff getting on for the price of new!
An alternative to Brembo kit that is currently taking off big time is Accossato:

http://www.accossato.com/doc/accossato- ... i-moto.pdf

Cheaper than Brembo at around 140 UK quid for a radial m/c to Brembo`s over 240 but pretty much on a par quality and performance wise.
There`s Magura too, similar prices to the Brembo kit:

http://www.onestopmotorcycles.com/produ ... ctid=16385

IRC, again similar in price to Brembo:

http://www.irccomponents.com/eng/index. ... 3=0&IID=36

And the one I`ve plumped for myself, ISR:

http://www.moto-racing.co.uk/item--ISR- ... ad+MC.html

I wanted the integral reservoir type but all ISR kit is rare to find second hand so when a radial m/c and matching clutch perch and lever came up for the right price I snapped them up.

Those Taiwanese Brembo copy m/c`s are as Phuk so rightly says,`downright dangerous`!
One of my pals picked one up for 20 odd quid at an autojumble, installed it on his Gixer, bled the brakes and even before he went for a test ride noticed fluid seepage past the piston. Lucky he did too because folk have had nasty accidents because of them.
Found this interesting link on the web:

http://planetminis.com/forums/z50-ct70- ... rakes.html

I do know that most of the copies have an inferior finish overall and the Brembo `B` on the casting is often missing or poorly detailed, something to look out for folks.

Is that one of them Thai copies if a girl originally made from a guy?

The late model R1/R6 M/C are a Brembo cast unit, not as good as an aftermarket billet version, but for $100 odd dollars new, I think it'll do the job.

Those Ducati Brembos look great Stank, but I'd like to keep the R6 M/C, R6 clutch perch so I can run matched a/m levers as well.

Cheers for the feedback guys, I'll try out some regular pads in the meantime & see if that changes anything.
