I just picked up a TDM850 1991 model cheap from the auctions with Ohlins rear shock and laser mufflers runs sweet, broken front headlight... My question is are these thngs much different in the engine gearbox dept to the TRX??? Are they any good otherwise?

apart from a different crank pin offset, and different gearbox ratios, different wheel sizes, different rear shock mounting on the swingarm etc etc etc they are very similar.
check out carpe tdm for more detail.
so, with dandy, me and you dual owners do we form a 'sub' group?
as we Always do . . . .
cheers

Mk1 has a hooooge jump between 1st and second

from memory the top 3 ratios are the same. Ohlins work well on them cos the original is shoite, .
They keep plodding on, front sussies are a better cartridge set up than the Mk2 and TRX, albeit a bit soft. I did a big (8,000 km) Euro trip on my 900 with a mate on his '92 Mk1, despite a blown fork seal, warped discs and a farty 2:1 - was a better bike off road than the 900.................lower seat for a dragarse like me. Here's a wee vid of Romanian "roads" and where our euros are going

RE Bulg/Rom - God that looks nuts -
Can I just hijack this discussion for a minute?
I am trying to persuade my mate Mal who is avery slow sedate rider that what he really needs in his life is a TDM850, at the momment he rides a Triumph Trophy 1200 which he finds far too heavy and thirsty for his needs. Any tips on info / forums to try

i noticed that in the first part of the video, you can see a fairing screen with a slot in it near the top.
does your mate find a difference in turbulence and wind noise?
if its a good thing, do they (whomever makes it) make one for the 900s and TRX?
cheers

The slotted one is stock on the Mk1 TDM from memory - I've got an MRA Vario one on mine - a lot quieter than stock and adjustable.
