FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
Hi all,
I want to run my new FCR41's with velocity stacks but don't like the idea of the air jets being exposed to the elements (I live in a fairly dusty climate).
I plan to use a Ramair twin sock air filter and I'm not happy with the idea of sticking a bit of something over the air jets to 'make do'.
What I'd like to get is something that combines the performance, length and coolness of the blue Keihin stacks with the practicality of the air filter adaptor which has an extension on the side to incorporate the air jets.
Does such a thing exist?
I think I read on here somewhere that Allens Performance may have something like that but they don't have any photos of them on their site.
Thanks,
Wayne

Another route would be K&N pods:

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
I've been thinking about this as you might imagine
I think those ramairs will suck down the velo stacks enough to provide some protection thru the base of the filter
But you are right...there's a big diff b/w the blue stacks and the airbox adaptors wrt intake protection

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
YES they exist, and are nicely made in alloy for clamp on filters although I don`t think they match the length of the blue plastic bellmouths. Try Allens by all means but Sudco in the states is where I believe they emanate from:Excalibre wrote:Hi all,

Allens are an excellent company, VERY helpful, if they can source them for you it`ll likely be from Sudco or they might have them as stock items but you could always contact Sudco direct to check out prices.
By the way, my single Ramair sock filters are a simple pull over the blue stacks and the foam is thick enough to cover the air jets too.

I haven`t done it yet but I will be linking my single socks with a hose between them to aid scavenging of fuel / air mixture, there are double socks available too, just look around that Ramair site for them

I've already started down the Ramair path. Those K&N adaptors look like the kind of thing I'm after though. They're a bit of an odd shape on the side but I may be able to use them as a stand-alone velocity stack and just pull the Ramair filter over them.

Those Sudco adaptors look virtually the same as the airbox adaptors that came with the carb kit. I don't think they'd be long enough to work efficiently as velocity stacks on their own. I have considered just using my airbox adaptors in the short term and and pulling the Ramair filter over them.
I have a twin sock Ramair filter on the way so I'll see how things go when it gets here.
I've sent Allens an email to see if they have what I'm after, no response as yet.

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
I've been running the bellmouths for a couple of years now with a home made single sock and all I've done is cut a small piece of foam to sit over these jets. when the single sock is pulled down it sits neatly and has held these in position no problem at all with no dramas thro dyno time.
The bellmouths are tuned for a specific task ,why not allow them to do what they do best. Read the thread killer placed up on the comparision on the blue and red bellmouths.. The airbox adaptors are shorter and will affect the tuning .Be great if you want to run the bike on the limiter
but prob comprimise some midrange

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
Has anyone tried using the airbox adapters and then the rubber trumpets off the original airbox and then attach the sock to that?
My bike maybe a dinosaur but it still has some bite & has a mighty roar.

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
Allens do sometimes take a wee while to respond to emails, both myself and other members have experienced this Excalibre. I know you`re in Aus but if you`ve not heard from them in say two or three days try giving them a phone call as they`ll be able to answer your question regarding the stacks pretty quickly I would imagine.
The K & N adaptors in the link Killerwhale posted earlier in the thread look like they could be close to what you`re after but they`re not true velocity stacks without the flared and rolled induction edge. Also just as Cobba says the blue Keihin stacks definately give the best all round fuelling and power, as proven many times on both my own and other members dyno runs.

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
Thanks for the advice and suggestions everyone, I really appreciate your input.
That idea about using the original airbox trumpets may have merit, at least in the short term.
It's great to see people thinking outside the square.

As it happens, one of the screws on the base of the pump on my carbs ended up touching the oil filler tube too. It was just enough that the carbs were vibrating against it.
The wall of the filler tube seems fairly thick so I used my dremel to carve out a bit of a divot in it as well as grinding back the offending screw a little. I ended up with a few mm of clearance which solved the problem.

Re: FCR velocity stacks that cover air jets?
Ahh, so this inlet tube / stub length and carb clearance issues on the oil tank filler neck isn`t just an isolated incident between a few members then? Interesting to hear that.
I know I mentioned that there may be some difference in inlet rubbers, perhaps original Yamaha versus aftermarket through the years etc but I really don`t think that to be the case.
It`s more likely it`s the alloy stubs that vary in length, perhaps due to where they are sourced from or poor quality assurance / inspection at point of manufacture.
Edit:
In fact having read throught the other thread I linked to again I`ve already kind of answered that, I believe the specifications given for the TRX are wrong, the carb kit must be TRX specific with the longer alloy tubes.
Because I bought `roughed out` tubes / stubs I was able to finish mine to suit my needs.
