Hi everyone,

New to owning a TRX & need some advice on what shocks fit them as the one on mine is crap?

Any info would be most appreciated.

I fitted a YZF750R ohlins, the length is nearly the same. But it is really important to alter the damping accordingly, I discovered the hard way: tyres worn out within one track day.

You can fit an R6 shock, you will need an adaptor for it though: Kayla can make you one.

Yep the R6 shock works well, or you can go down the `new` route with a VERY reasonably priced Hagon unit:

Good company Hagon, the shock will be decent quality and fully rebuildable too.

HI, I am also looking to upgrade my worn out monoshock, Doing a bit of research

So far the choices are, inc delivery to Australia
Hagon G2051 $600 from UK
Hyperpro emulsion YA08-oab $800 from Australian Distributor (custom
settings)
Amortisseur Wilbers Yamaha $600 from France (Custom Settings)
The new YSS range look much better than the old but cant seem to find a
TRX replacement? Nitron? ESS?

The Hagon seems to have an average reputation, the hyperpro has a very
good reputation, but at 25% cheaper it seems hard to go past the
Wilbers.

Anyone used the Wilbers? I just want street settings not for the track, so dont need anything "Trick".

I`ve personally never had a Wilbers shock or shocks on any of my bikes but I do know folk who have and were very pleased with them.
Not on TRX`s I might add, most were on racing bikes.You can`t go far wrong with a FIVE year warranty though!:

Another question, if we can get custom shocks, is it worth getting slightly longer rear shocks to raise the rear 10-20mm?
Supposed to sharpen up the steering but would not want to modify it too far.

Hi in regards to the R6 shock, does it matter what model it's from?
I.e The 1999 R6 is apporx 195kg, but the other models are around the 170kg mark.

You need a 2006-on R6 shock.

I'm installing Kayla's R6 conversion - does anyone have initial 'standard' settings to start from (76kg solo rider) based on experience?

I've also gone the route of a Kayla adaptor and I bought a mint 2010 R6 shock off eGay. Its part of this winters overhaul so I've not had it on the bike as yet. I posted on the PB forum for base settings for the R6 shock in readiness for fitting it and this was the response. Hope its of some use. I'm about 11stone and plan to start with these settings as a base:

preload - 4
rebound - 16 clicks anti clockwise from fully turned in
fast compression - 3 turns anti clockwise from fully turned in
slow compression - 16 clicks anti clockwise from fully turned in

base settings taken from a 2008 R6 handbook.

Let me know how you find them and what adjustments you make.

Hmm... now i gotta decide which way i wanna go.. I dont know much about Hagon, but the brits seem to love em. Wilbers are a quality known brand, Ohlins are WAY over priced. Im hugely tempted to go a new Wilbers with adjustable everything, else get a R1 / R6 unit and make an adapter.

Whats others take on this, R6 with adapter seems to be the go, others who have done it agree ? wortth the investment ?

After encountering complications with a rebuild of the original TRX unit I went the R6 route with an adapter, this is a straight swap with some set up time and is a cost effective upgrade.

I have a Wilber mono sport line sprung unit I fitted to my 1000 Fazer when I up-graded the front and rear, excellent unit that still works well with the revised front end, fully adjustable, five year warranty no problems with this since fitted 6 years ago and makes the bike handle like it should have done when Yamaha built it.

I have a R6 adaptor. I got Kayla to make it slightly longer and now have more rear ride height without having to use longer dog bones. From the little I got to use the TRX before the clutch decided to make a break for freedom I am very impressed.
I reset the R6 shock back to R6 standard settings and it seems fine for road use if a little soft (But I am 17 stone!) Ultimately I might see if I can get it re-sprung but at the moment I have wacked up the preload.
I'm not sure of the state of my front forks (The look standard but I haven't had them apart since I bought it so may have been upgraded in some way) but bouncing the bike up and down at standstill the bike seems to go up and down the same rate front and back in a very pleasing way. This seems to me that the suspension is working well together (Everyone will now tell me this is a load of crap but I'm happy)
