Cruise Control / Throttle Lock

Post by davamb » Sun Jun 07, 2009 1:00 am

This is my second attempt at fitting an aftermarket cruise control.
I've got Oxford heated grips fitted and I don't think they'll come off without damage thanks to the SupaGlue used to fit them so this limits my choices a bit to ones that can be fitted over the existing grip.
The previous style (forgot the brand) was designed to fit between the switch block and the rubber grip and clamped to the switch block.
Image
Not enough room between the grip and the block so I returned the unit and exchanged it for the one I've got on now.

Image
As you can see, there's not a lot of room. My hand only just fits - with a glove on it's a bit on the tight side.
I know, I know, function over form, but it really looks hideous!
Image
I've reversed the actuator lever so that it's up when locked - a bit harder to engage but easier to thumb it back down quickly to release.
Still a bit of drag on the throttle, exacerbated by the hot grip cable somewhat. I added a drop of oil and this improved matters without compromising the friction lock.

I can't help thinking there's a better way to do this, some sort of clamp that bears on the throttle cable disc perhaps. I'll see if the manual shows an exploded pic of this part so I can explain what I mean. Back later.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

Not much room to move there, Dave. Looks like you're having as much trouble with this as I am having with those blasted levers!

Bob

BTW I thought you were going to the BSHTFU rally at Bathurst?

Yeah, really, really wanted to go Bob, but have so much work to do with new designs before the CEDIA exhibition. Not best pleased - work getting in the way of riding. Ended up with a cold, so it would have made riding to Bathurst not such a great idea, so there's some consolation. Then again, it is the BSHTFU... Hope all the gang are having a great time (lucky bastards).

Anywho... been thinking of other ways to do this:
(1) a friction device against the throttle cable disc at the handlebars as mentioned before,
(2) a flexible tape loop that bears against the throttle or grip with some means of tensioning it to lock,
(3) some sort of friction device between the throttle block and the big rubber flange of the grip itself,
(4) a solenoid to lock the throttle setting down at the carb end (or perhaps even a stepper motor).
Needs to be simple, failsafe and easily removable.
Ride Well!
Cheers, Dave.

Ever heard of the throttle rocker?

I 've never tried one myself but I am willing to.

While searching for the pic above I found this one:

It doesn't have to be difficult every time

Y'sure that isn't something you'd find in one of your infamous Amsterdam tourist shops? 8)

Hi Dave,
I've got a "Throttlemeister" fitted to my FJR. It replaces the bar ends and the throttle side twists up to the grip. A simple friction device :D Works for me crossing the big paddock :D
Have a look at http://www.throttlemeister.com :D
Cheers, Alan.

This looks like a keyring attached to an O ring on your handle bar grip ? Can someone tell me how it acts as a cruise control ? :?
I just bought an ebay throttle rocker which I'm yet to use (raining again  ). Feels good but it touches the tank on full lock. #-o
