Taillights, any direct replacement?

Hey!
Just wondering if anyone knows if the R1 98-99 taillight is a direct fit, i think i read somewhere it was but canÃƒâ€šÃ‚Â´t find it again!

Any other wich is a direct replacement?

I think you can just fit the early R1 lights without modifying anything, but they will rub on the seat unit and extend out the back a bit like the standard lights.

I cut down one, so that it fitted rather more in an 'original' manner.

It's also fitted with a pair of LED clusters.

I had various ideas. One plan involved making an LED cluster that included indicators and would fit inside a clear lens with similar (but cut down) shape to the original rear light. But I figured that would be a fair bit of work.

And you can get it with clear lens etc at evilbay for under 70Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£, time is money!?

Got me an aftermarket R1 tail light assembly today. Yeah, just trying to figure how to reduce it down to how Burty has it. Do you have to take the seat of it to fit, 'cos I have a Ventura rack on it, and I can't seem to fit it in there without having to remove something. Was thinking I may cut a piece of backing perspex to size and paint it silver and cut holes to size for the bulb holders to reduce the lens size down without butchering any of the bodywork.

The first one, is the one on my bike in the photo's above.

I think there is at least one member of this forum that has the second (later) type fitted.

I think you will have to take the seat unit off really. It works better that way. Surely the Ventura system just unbolts doesn't it?

I used the LED tailight off a 01' R6/R1. I shaved the back fairing at the top and sides about 1mm to fit it in. but no altering is needed on the light itself and it simply bolts on to the existing holes in the rear frame. Hmm.. might have a piccy here somewhere..........

Got my lens cut down in a similar manner to yours, and a piece of perspex as a backing plate. A question, where did you get your LED clusters from? What I was thinking of looking at was a 40 LED cluster with a backing plate with a "pigtail" 1157 dual bayonet connection so I can plug them straight into the std bulb connector. Anybody know where I can get something like that other than from the USA?

I was gonna cut out the bulb connectors from the donor R1 backing plate and glue them on to accept normal LED bulbs, but I butchered them up and I think this would be too difficult. Any ideas?

These suited me because I wanted something that filled the circular lenses of the R1 lens. But they have all sorts of other options available.

If you are going to use normal bulb holders then you are limited in size, to something around the size of a standard bulb, so that it will go through the hole, otherwise you need a lens or a back plate that comes off. I figured that LEDs should never need to be replaced (so long as the construction is up to standard) so mine are hard wired.

I was going to build my own LED units, but the cost of LEDs and time meant I figured buying something ready made made more sense.
