R1 Forks - Impulse Buy

Post by Olputt » Tue Aug 22, 2006 2:06 am

I picked up a pair of R1 forks on Ebay as an impulse buy along with some blue pot calipers :D . Can anyone tell me what else is involved in the conversion please i.e. do I need a R1 front wheel and axle? I do seem to remember that there was a combination of R1 lower tree and TRX upper or something along those lines.

Any Information would be great.

Cheers
Nick

Simple question, Do R1 brake calipers have covers to hide the pads?

The R1 forks and Calipers turned up last night and the first thing that stood out was how good the forks look :D and the second thing was the calipers have no covers. Is this normal?

Cheers

Thanks Kev,

Another question - Can I use the TRX master cylinder with the R1 calipers?

Thanks in advance

Yes you can OP, that's what I did with my R6s. Have an R6 master cylinder and lever brand new ready to go, but haven't felt the need to replace them yet (2 years later).

Just something to think about with the master cylinder. My trx is a 96 model, so I don't know if the original m.c. is the same as on later models, but mine has the blue spots on it, and it has always felt a bit 'light switch' on the front brakes; not much, sorry NO feel at the lever, just a single point where the brakes came on hard.
I just bought an R6 master for $150 at Metro Bike Wreckers (Silverwater Rd Silverwater) and it is SOOO much different! A very light touch on the lever brings the brakes on nice and hard and I can feel and modulate the brakes on harder or gently back them off without letting right off.
I would have a think about how much feel you guys have at the lever, because if it is anything like what I described then you would be well worth doing the swap.
Well thats my $0.02 worth anyway :D hope it helps.

You hit it right on the head there Kirk. I stayed with the trx master cylinder because i thought the brakes can't get any better than this, but they do. You get more travel and feel with the R6/R1 mc . Whichever way you go OP you'll be happy with the results.

I'm just a lazy shit, and I will get around to doing the R6 MC conversion...................eventually, maybe when I put a new set of front discs on

Hey Nick
Interesting developements, you'll love the blue spots. I'm open to persuasion re the R6 master cylinder but i'm happy with the TRX master cylinder and brand new pads in mine. It's entirly possible that the R6/R1 gives more feel but but I don't think you'll have any dramas. The soft front end is more of an issue for me.
good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for your $0.02 worth Kirk - sounds like some good advice and with Kev backing you up it's now gospel. Wombat - I'm a lazy shit too, so John it will be months before you get an update

But really - thanks for all that, sounds like the R6 mc is the way to go when the budget allows.

Turns out the seller forgot to post the brass plates that click in over the top of the pads to hold it all in place, so now waiting for them to arrive and with Phillip Island coming up I'll prob wait till the bank account recovers before blowing my drinking money on new sintered R1 pads.

ps. according to the local dealer, these stamped out $0.20 pieces of brass are........wait for it..........................$38.00 each

Take it Easy...............................

Nick
'Regular' blue spot pads from Sydney City Motorcycles were $100 for two sets
Fortunately they work a treat :) mine was standing on its nose outbraking just about everything else at Eastern Creek. Not sure how different/ much better the sintered variety could be :?: i guess you'll be letting us know :!:
