I had a search of the forum to find out any info, someone will prove me wrong but I couldn't find anything relevant.

I recently found out that the Automatic Cam Chain Tensioner for a cbr954 fits the TRX, after a bit more digging around it seems that there are only a handful of forms that covers most bikes made by the big Japanese companies, regardless of capacity.

I bought myself a manual cam chain tensioner for the blade because its such a PITA to get to, you have to drop the engine out of the frame to remove the tensioner! It also makes alot of sense from a servicing point as you can wind the tensioner completely off, freeing the chain without breaking the gasket on the tensioner. Obviously you have to be a little more in tune with your bike, but thats no bad thing.

Has anyone used a manual tensioner on their TRX?

Turns out the Cam Chain Tensioner from a lot of different bikes will fit the bolt pattern and position, but the reach isn't long enough. I bought a DRZ400 MCC from ebay, really nice bit of kit, billet machined body with an o-ring groove rather than paper gasket, tensioner stroke was about 20mm too short so I've fettled an A4 Stainless bolt to suit, pretty pleased with the end result. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

Is the trx cam chain tensioner known to fail?

Well done Neil, I too prefer `manual` tensioners on my bikes. My Skorpion has one and my TL thou will have a pair soon too.

Coxy, not sure if the standard unit is prone to fail, there wasn't anything wrong with the one I took off. It started as an exercise for the Blade then I realised they were the same fit and it went from there. Its certainly a whole heap easier when checking valve clearances!
