Back firing on throttle closing

Hi
Can somebody give me some ideas- all of a sudden the bike started to backfire on acceleration and deceleration with a loss of power. I have cleaned the carbs and this seems to have got rid of the backfiring on acceleration but on deceleration the hotter the engine Is the more it backfires - seems to be from both cylinders, also a couple of times it has backfired through the carbs
> I have no idea of the engine history but I think mileage is around 48K - don't know if the shims have been checked
> Engine is quite noisy when hot but fine on start up
I have read a lot about emulsion tubes and tight shims - could it be this or is it an air leak - could not find one with the carbs off but hey
