LED instrument cluster lights

Post by Wombat » Fri Feb 13, 2015 6:51 am

Gonna try some LED globes in the instruments cos since put the new pipes on I seem to be constantly blowing globes
(must be the frequency or the vibration)
Other than white, what other colours have people used, I'd like to experiment with either blue or red

this was a talked about topic on facebook recently...the LEDs give a clearer view and can have a better colouring in blue and red, let alone the White .
Unusual you should be blowing the small dash bulbs tho....not usual there
On the short...the LEDs ..thumbs up ..as we don't have that symbol here

Just a point to consider...
Our eyes are much more sensitive to blue than to red.
Most dash lights are red so that our eyes do not have to adjust from the low intensity light we are looking at, assuming night riding of course, to the bright light of the instrument panel.
You see this in all the battleship and submarine movies.
It's a real thing, try riding at night with a bright white/blue dash and see hard it is to go from seeing the road to seeing the dash.

Wreckage,

the parts from Jaycar are:

T10 Wedge LED globe Blue - ZD0392 @ $1.95 ea or $1.40 for 4+
There is also red and white

A better option in hindsight maybe

T10 Wedge Replacement globes in either Red,White or Yellow
15 x White ZD0495
15 x Red ZD0496
15 x Yellow ZD0497
15 globes for $24.95

These are wedge globes with LED chips around and on top giving a 360 deg illumination
The ones I bought are good but their light path is very linear, not like an incandescent globe. It gives you dark spots on the dials.
A little bit of experimentation is still needed

Thanks, Bob. Appreciated. I haven't decided what to do yet. My speedo bulb is currently blown and I'm not sure of the part # to order.

Not sure if this is considered as thread hijacking, but to take the LED question a step further I'm looking at putting some super bright led's in my indicators, I was followed one night by a guy running an HID headlamp it was so bright (but focused so it wasn't a floodlight just a pool of light) I couldn't tell how far away he was and had no idea if his indicators were on, so i couldn't see if he was going to roll up the outside of me [in my car]. After indicating long enough i slowly made my move but its always made me think, if i knew he was there but couldn't see what he was doing, what would the situation be if it was me on the bike and a half-wit in the car?

As the darker nights start to loom again and my interpretation of 'not wanting to rush into things' I figured I'd give myself a few months forewarning.

I've read its a simple enough job to replace the bulbs they are just plug and play, but the lack of drain can screw up the electrical system?... You can tell I'm mechanically minded #-o

I installed LEDs in the dials but went back to incandescent as LEDs gave a pink glow to my red import dials?
