Brake upgrades

Post by slinky » Tue Aug 19, 2014 11:39 am

Hey guys, I'm new to the TRX family and am taking my newly acquired 96 model to the track for the first time in a couple of months. I'd like to do the brake conversion with the upgrade to R6 calipers. Whose done this and is the braking power considerably better? Can I get any R6 model brakes that will just bolt straight on or is there a preferred year? Would it be best to change the rotors too? Sorry if their noob questions, I coudln't find any appropriate threads that had the info. Cheers!

Just want to add that you really should also swap the master cylinder and lines while you're at it. Makes a world of difference.

Welcome!

Power, a little, but much better feel. I changed to Goldspot calipers which are slightly lighter than the Bluespots & feature coated Aluminium piston. I matched that with the Radial Brembo MC from the R1, very good feel & power.

(You can also rebuild the original calipers for about the same price as changing to a better, newer system  )

Yep, later model before they went to Radial mounted calipers would be in better condition, generally. Early Bluespots have an external line, probably avoid those ones. Silverspots are an option also, I assume they are much the same as the Goldspots, can not confirm that though.

Not neccesray per se, however the pads do sit in a slightly different place, so if you're existing rotors are quite worn, maybe.

All good, that's what the forum is here for.

Now post up some photos!

Thanks M.V I'll look into all of the above and hopefully get some more mods on the way. Here's a pic of my TRX at the Audley Weir in Royal National Park outside of Sydney.

Hi slinky,
Good to see another TRX convert...

Here's a little food for thought...
Hows the suspension on your TRX?
Std, the front forks are undersprung but ok if your a featherweight under 60kg and usually if std rear shock is still inplace,(75kg rider weight std) it will be tired and in need of attention.
If you start upgrading brakes, it only places more stress on the suspension and tyres.
For the price of setting up bluespots , pads and M/C brake lines , you can prob get a set of front springs to suit your weight and just about pay for the rebuild of the rear shock.
Having the suspension sorted first will give you the confidence to carry a little more speed into the corners anyhow.
Your tyres will apreciate it more too

The suspension seems a bit stiff around town. I'm about 70kgs on a good day. At the moment I'm leaning toward just doing rotors and master cylinder to get more power into it. I'll get in contact with my mechanic and see what he thinks could be a good option. Thanks for the advice folks!

So the TRX is at the mech and he's sorted me a 2nd hand Nissin master cylinder and some 99 model R1 calipers with a new set of rotors. I should have much better bite from now on in. He was originally going to strip and grease the calipers and get some new pads but called me after he'd taken them apart and said they were some of the worst calipers he'd seen :(

I think the previous owners mechanic didn't do much at all to the bike but charged him for all the supposed servicing and upgrades which is a shame. She's in good hands now though :)

Just check with the mechanic that it's a 14mm master cyclinder (suitable for bluespots) compared to the std trx which is 5/8. its stamped on it  the std trx 5/8 master feels a little wooden and not really suited for the bluespots ...

So the TRX has new brakes. I have a set of R1 goldspots with a 2nd hand nissin master cyl that works a treat and a new pair of brake rotors. Just had a track day with them and they were great. Much better braking power and easier to handle braking at speed.
Stoked to say the least :)
