Which Blue/Gold spot to fit?

Hi, I've done some searching but I can't see a clear answer to which year or model R1 or R6 caliper I should upgrade to. Are you able to advise which calipers bolt straight on please? Do gold spots from an R1 fit?

Hi,

You need the non-radial callipers from an R1/R6 and yes, they bolt straight on. I think they changed to radial brakes from about 2004. Make sure you get a matching master cylinder as well otherwise the brakes will feel wooden. The master cylinder looks identical to the original TRX one and also is a straight swap. You can even use the TRX brake lever on the R1/R6 master cylinder to keep the original look. You may need new brake lines as the banjo bolts fit differently on the R1/R6 brakes. The callipers look like this:

Make sure you DON'T get callipers that look like this - these are the radials.

Nice photos there Excalibre, the size of the master cylinder can be found on the handlebar side of the cylinder in raised numbers....5/8 for the TRX and 14mm for the R1 or R6.

As far as I've known, the blue spots have stainless pistons inside and the Gold spots are an all alloy affair...best benefit to the all alloy is the lack of electrolysis to the moving parts and maybe a little weight...food for thought.

Great, thank you for your response. I recall a friend fitting blue spot R1 calipers to my first TRX several years ago, but he didn't mention the master cylinder. I rode around with just the blue spots (plus one track day) and no amendment to the brake line either. I've got braded hoses at the moment. I think what I might do is do a track day as it is and if braking proves to be an ordeal then i'll go ahead and fit the blue or gold spots. Thanks again for confirming the fitments.

I've just fitted gold spots with new discs also. Braking power is much much better than stock. I just had a track day with them and they were awesome. Definitely recommend it!

FWIW I put blue spots on my 96, std master cylinder, and they felt wooden. I've got gold spots on my 98, standard master cylinder, and they feel great....better than my street R with radials...so I never fitted the R1 master cylinder that came with the calipers...weird huh? :o

That's odd, I thought the piston sizes between the blue & gold's were identical...

Maybe your '96 could do with a M/C rebuild?

I had no problems with the standard M/C & gold spots until I took it to a trackday at Broadford, but the R1 M/C is a huge improvement for everyday & trackday riding.

Fwiw.
lucky me, I now have 4 bikes with r6 brakes.
two trx with '04 r6 blues and matching 14mm masters .. a 99/00 r6 with blues and 14mm master .... and an '05 r6 with radial golds and radial master. All with braided lines m
I thought the '04 combo was the business....but the radial master is the best of all for feel and one finger operation.
no contest.
looking for three masters now ..... oh my poor wallet....... oh well :-)

Like I say...weird. The 96 was bought in 96 as soon as they landed here and the calipers went on probably around 2000...that bike is long gone. The current one with goldies is progressive one finger braking on the road so I'm OK with it...brakes are better than the forks  If anyone wants the R1 braided lines that came with the calipers it'll cost you postage and a beer 8)
