Did much the same to paint my engine. Careful cleaning is the key and careful masking-taping of all the bits you dont want spraying.

I used PJ1 which is not cheap but gives a good finish without having to hot cure, plus they do a nice satin black which is what I was after.

Also, I had the engine totally out the bike and supported on a rod through the front belly-pan mounts and on axle stands so I could pretty much rotate it forwards/backwards loads to get in all the nooks and crannies.

I painted the engine on my fazer thousand 6 month ago using a similar procedure, and the results are awful.
I did lots of light dustings, and it just looked dull with a really rough finish, like a fine sandpaper

What was the temperature you carried out this process in?
I ALWAYS warm rattle cans to around 50 degrees in my oven before using them, and pick a day to do any `outside` aerosol painting when the temperature is high, humidity low and light winds.
Being too far away from whatever you`re painting will give a powdery appearance, best to practice a tad on something scrap or cardboard etc.
I can get a similar finish with a rattle can as a body shop technician can get with a spray gun but you can`t rush it or cut corners on preparation.

For once Mince, I will have to totally disagree with your practice of heating up spray cans!! There is a guy here in Aus who did exactly what you said to his spray can so he could paint around the windows of his 4X4 in mat black, well as the story goes the spray can blew up in his face.



My advise is to NEVER heat pressure pack cans at ALL!

Well I hear ya Stankflapper and I`m sure defective rattle cans exist, but I trust the component parts of a rattle can to withstand the type of temperature that can easily be found in the window of a hardware / motor factors shop in summer.
Even in the northern hemisphere 50 dgrees C behind glass is often encountered. In the land of Aus you could expect maybe 60 degrees C or more!
Obviously anything pressurised can fail but it works for me and has done for years. I will state here and now though, it is not COMPULSARY to follow what others do and if you do, you make your choices, you take your risks.
Please disregard what I have said regarding rattle can use as advice folks, it was simply me explaining the methods I use to achieve the effects I want.
I`m not big on safety in general, you would never catch me in full leathers either by the way, it`s not my type of biking, I cannot stand full face helmets either.
We are what we are, diversity makes the species stronger as they say.

Ah well, now you have me there. I DEFINATELY don`t do that, never have, not once in me near fifty years.
Would rather abstain altogether than risk the finish on me little fireman.
There`s nothing worse than having sex with a `dirty` and pulling out to find a ripped and torn condom, especially if you weren`t wearing one in the first place!

I think putting a rattle-can in an oven is pretty much asking for trouble.
I always store the paint can inside overnight before, and somewhere warm, or stand in some warm (not boiling!) water before using.
