$5 bum pad replacement

Post by Excalibre » Thu Oct 06, 2011 10:14 am

Here's an idea for an inexpensive replacement bum pad.
Image

I bought a piece of high-density, closed cell foam rubber from Clark Rubber (a store chain in Australia).
Being 'closed cell' means that it is water proof so doesn't act like a sponge.
The size I used was 12mm, but it also comes in 20mm thickness.

I used the original bum pad as a template and cut the foam rubber roughly to size. Then I used a fine grade sanding disc on my angle grinder to shape it and smooth off the edges. I did this fairly quickly and in hindsight I could have achieved a better finish with a little more time.
Then I covered the whole back of the pad with thin double sided tape and attached it to the bike.

As a final touch, I gave it a coating of black wipe-on shoe wax, the kind that goes on as a liquid with a sponge applicator then dries in a couple of minutes. This made it a bit blacker and will hopefully add to the durability.

I'm very pleased with the result and it should be very easy to replace if/when it gets too scuffed.

The best part, it cost less than $5! (although I did already have the double sided tape and shoe polish)

Well done Excalibre, mines getting to the point of embarassment. I just wasn't willing to fork out what Yamaha want for the part as a spare!

Thanks Bob,

Mine wasn't too bad but my TRX is in great condition and the bit of damage that the bum pad had just seemed out of place.
The $5 fix started of as a bit of an experiment, the finish isn't perfect as I was a bit surprised that it worked at all!

I think it would be possible to achieve a very professional result with a bit of care and a very fine sanding disc.

Here's a gratuitous photo of the rest of my bike.

I just bought a TRX and want to replace the bum pad. Causeway Yamaha in Perth quoted $264 for an original, so I may well be trying this out.

Thanks Rod :) ,

That's from a couple of years ago at Mallala (North of Adelaide). It's had quite a few performance upgrades since then but still looks more-or-less like a stock TRX.
The original $5 bum pad hasn't fallen off yet and still looks good too!

Damm I thought this tread was about cheap incontinence pads.. :? could have saved Janets dad a few bob... well as they say "shit happens"
But I do like the placement of the TRX decal on the fairing Wayne, adds to the lines on the bike. 8) The super sports twin sticker on the rear would balance it out just nice. I might look at that as an option on the raceglass...

Hi Cobba,

I can't take credit for the placement of the decals, they were like that when I bought the bike. Unfortunately I had an incident a bit over a year ago and had to replace the front fairing (amongst other things). The new fairing doesn't have the side decals but I eventually plan to order some and put them on the same way.
