r6 forks

Has anyone used the RWU ( 98-02 )forks from the r6 for a front end swap? I wanted to keep the original looking forks but just upgrade. The YZF 600 forks are hard to find but there are heaps of early r6 forks out there. Seems to be fairly straight forward, most likely yokes as well as the axle. What you reckon?

99-02 R6 forks are 43mm as opposed to TRX at 41mm.
I have a 5EB R6 and TRX with Std frontends.
R6 are shorter overall...haven't checked the gap between the Rex and them tho.
They definitely feel more solid over midcorner bumps and under braking.

They would be a lot easier and respond better to rebuild than the original setup.

Yep, I've fitted them to my Trx. They are quite a bit shorter but work well with 0.9 Kg springs. They are inexpensive and not at all trendy, but hsve the benefit of compression and rebound damping. If you painted them black, they'd be proper stealthy

What else did you use in place of the original front end?
Did you use the trx wheel or the r6 wheel?
If you used the trx wheel did you get the speedo to work?
How much shorter are they?
Did you use the the r6 yokes?

Pressed the original stem out of the Trx yoke. Knurled it and pressed it into the R6 btm yoke. Used a spacer I turned up on the lathe and fitted the R6 top yoke.
I used the R6 front wheel and used an old CBR600 speedo drive gearbox which I dismantled and bored out to accept the R6 wheel spindle. Faced off a few mm from the inside of the left fork lower a did a little machining the the LHS of the wheel to accept the CBR speedo gearbox.

Now I've written all that, it sounds like a p.i.t.a. (which it probably was )

Couldn't use the old trx speedo drive?

No. R6 spindle is larger diameter, 22mm (ish) against Trx 17mm (ish), CBR600 speedo drive gearbox was something like 20mm. I dismantled it and bored it out to 22mm to fit the R6 wheel spindle.
Later than around '98 bikes with decent forks seem to have gearbox sensors to transmit a signal to an electronic speedometer. 20mm was the biggest bored conventional drive gearbox I was able to find.

You could get around the speedo cable by putting in aftermarket dash that use a magnetic pickup. Would save the extra hassle on top of the other fiddly bits. A little bit more money, yes.

If I can engineer a safe sound and effective solution myself inexpensively, I will, preferring to use the cash saved for things like tyres (or more bikes )....
and making, where possible, is a lot more satisfying than buying.

With a digital dash too, it only creates another lot of modifications itself. You can use the cheap n nasty quick splice type scotchlok connectors they supply or as I chose to place new multipin connectors onto the original loom to ultimately do the job properly and if ever I have to remove the main loom or sort any signal issues , it's simple and easy.
