Re: What did you do today?
So today I took the boxing gloves to Rods place and mouthgear as he said today was a good day for blueing. I wandered in and to my surprise I was confronted with a toothbrush and pointed in the direction of the Kerosine bath... So scrubbing and cleaning some of the cases for a few hrs . Then once dry I began to slowly shave all the old pieces of gasket stuck to the face of the case with a blade. Oh did I mention the silicone stuck in bolt holes and threads and around the gasket face of the cases.
Then out with a tap n die set to clean all the threads out before I've listened to my back crack n pop as I've retreived a slab of granite from the shelf. A dead flat surface for me to work off as I began with some 800 wet n dry and in a circular motion ,one way then the other cleaning the gasket face .
Then a quick wipe and out with the marking pen and colouring the gasket face black and onto the wet n dry on the stone once again . After a few rotations lifting the case and inspection shows any hollow points on the face as they still apear black from the marking pen. Left and right ,round n round lift again till I have a true flat surface for the cases and gasket to to marry against.
As Rod pointed out to me on the first case , The hollow point apearing at a point between three consecutive bolt holes pointing out how overtightening the case at this point and then the constant heating and cooling as the motors turned on and off has then created the inperfection at this point. I can see I have a couple of days work infront of me on this task.. so as grasshopper goes back to wax on wax off I'll leave you with this photo

Re: What did you do today?
AND HERE IS THE REASON WHY ALSO I'M DOING THIS..
WHO EVER HAD ATTACKED THE PREVIOUS REBUILD HAD SCORED INTO SOME OF THE FACES WITH SOMETHING LIKE A SCREWDRIVER TO PRISE THEM APART SO THE FLATTER , CLEANER, TIGHTER FIT AND IF TENSIONED CORRECTLY IN THE RIGHT PATTERN ALSO WITH A NEW GASKET ALL SHOULD BE PERFECT WITH NO LEAK

Re: What did you do today?
Down on the bottom engine sump there lives the oil pressure valve fed from the pump. The ball is pushed up against a rubber seal by a spring and if the oil pressure is too low,the ball seats itself against the seal to build pressure then as soon as the pressure builds again this presses down against the spring and opens the flow of oil once again. Now if this doesnt seal properly this compromises your oil pressure during those minimum flow times, low idle etc..
This is something I learnt today so for just a couple of dollars a new seat check ball part no. 3LD 13113-00-00 .... will be something on the new parts list as it will only take a small piece of gump or metal to damage and stop the ball seating properly.

Re: What did you do today? Cobba's rebuild
Great thread Cobba.
I'm keen as to do strip and what I can myself like you and Rod, but just worried I'll stuff it up as my mechanical aptitude is a fat zero though I am keen to learn. Even will go so far as getting a new stainless workbench, parts cleaner tub and even the granite flat surface, but worried I'll screw something up
The route you're taking seems best approach. In two minds now how to proceed with mine.

Once I started confidence grew and slow and steady wins the race in this case. I just take pics and write notes as I go as references. Engineering shops do all the precise work so ultimately its just a process of pulling it apart and slowly putting it back together as you get parts back from the workshop. There has been plenty on here who have never attempted hhis before with rebuild on here so there's plenty of knowledge to draw on if you need to question something.

I'm sold, I'll have a crack at it. That's obviously not a Haynes manual you're using. Is it available online, or do you have a link?
