Opinions and or recommendations?

Long story: but some of you may remember me binning my old Speed Triple late last year. Main damage was to the LHS Engine Cover (crankcase breather), bars, peg & gear lever, everything else seemed fine. The insurer then wrote the bike off as an "uneconomical repair" (parts would have been around £700).

Anyway, it's got me thinking about crash bungs, and their effectiveness etc, especially on older bikes like the TRX and the new Speed Triple (a 955 this time ). I've heard from a few people that the mid frame one's do prevent damage to the engine casings, should the worst happen.

Anyone on here got any experience of them?

Which one's would you recommend?

R&G Racing bungs are excellent but with the TRX you will still get damage to the covers.

I fab'd some covers for the oil pump and alternator covers (ugly but effective on track) and also tried a bung in the threaded hole next to the engine cover but that kept grounding out ....

Go to Ikea, but a cheap vinyl chopping board, take it home and cut it into `sliders` that you can mount onto you casings.
It`s very easy to drill and tap some blind holes into the casings or even bond the vinyl sliders on with some good contact adhesive.
Crash bungs can and do cause bikes to flip, this increases the chances of severe damage, frames bent etc.
Sliders are much more in favour with racers nowadays.

this is something Kev pointed out to me on the trackbike with solid crash bungs mounted on the frame, he showed me where the crash bung had bent when it came down and the bottom edge closest to the frame had pushed onto the frame and left a small dent into the steel trellis. Small but prob enough if you had an anal inspector to not pass the bike unless I put a tiny bit of bog on it. and quick respray. I got an idea he made some up out of a softer, material himself.

Your bike's a bit of a mess mate, but hopefully, you're OK.

Looks like the bungs did the trick of saving your engine casings, hopefully you can repair the rest.

the bike started straight away once recovered. There is some slight gravel rash only on one of the lower covers. Had the engine been damaged I would have sold it for parts, fortunately it is mainly cosmetic.

Bit of an update:

I bought 2 sets of Crash Bungs, 1 for the Speed Triple, 1 for the TRX from Crash Bobbins off UK eBay. They arrived quickly, and seem like very good pieces of kit (though I hope to never have to test their efficiency on either bike! ).

I have only fitted the bungs to the Triumph so far. The RHS bung went on without any problems, however, the LHS bungs bolt was about 10mm too short. I emailed the seller, explaining what had happened, he asked a few questions (dimensions etc), and then sent out a new bolt FOC. When the bolt arrived, the bung went on without a problem.

Can't recommend their service enough, very friendly & professional, with a good product at a very good price.

Just waiting on some new sockets to fit the bungs to the TRX.
