A wanderer returns....

Post by Greg » Mon Nov 20, 2006 8:48 pm

Hi All -

My name is Greg, I am a Trixaholic and it has been almost a year since my last posting....

Well, I have an excuse I guess, having got all excited by another 'proper' Vee Twin, this one of 950cc, driving an animal of a KTM, the Adventure 'S' which took me on a monster off-road tour of Morocco.. Not really being a Ewan McBoorman type, my wanderlust seems to have been satisfied - for the time being at least - and hauling a rolling 400kg through some of the worst that Maroc could offer was more than enough of a challenge, so I'm heading back to Trixieland for the summer.

Anyway, I'm glad I didn't sell the TRX in the end and indeed ended up keeping the other 'BOOST' special too...

So - over the months I've gathered enough bits to try and make my Trixer a little different and have started with an R1 conversion for the front end. I have to say it was Honk and Phuk (or should it be Phuk and Honk...?) who started me off on this, Pete and his tales of trackday glory, and Honk's engineering posts were plenty to get me thinking. Anyway, thanks to Ebay I am now the proud owner of two sets of R1 USD forklegs (one Blue top and one Gold top), a 1999 bottom yoke, a 2003 bottom yoke, two 2003 top yokes, an R1 Fender, an R1 spindle, a set of Blue spot calipers and hoses and a YZF 1000 front wheel and discs. So far I've realised that the '99 and '03 yokes are different ('03 forklegs are further forward from the steering stem), and that the '99 forklegs have softer springs than the '03s.
Remembering in the anals of my memory bank that Honk once described pressing out the R1 stem from the bottom yoke and re-inserting the TRX stem in its place, I waddled off to my local bike engineer who happily pressed out the R1 stem. He then smugly announced that the TRX stem was too small to go back in the R1 yoke and would have to be built up with weld, then lathe-turned to size... hmmmm.

Honk old chap, can you remember having any problems like this ?? And, does anyone know if I'm likely to run into any problems with the disc offset of the Thunderarse wheel... I'm just off to have a play with the bits, I may soon have some R1 parts for sale lol...

Hi Greg

welcome back

The TRX stem presses straight into a YZF750 bottom yoke (which I have on mine with an R1 top yoke) and I'm pretty sure (99%) that it also presses straight into the R1 bottom yoke (which is what Honk has got).

Only difference is a very small difference in offset.

spindles..??

Blue top fork wheel spindles are different to Gold top fork wheel spindles... bugger!

But, with the right spacers the wheel and disc seem to be ok, just need a speedo drive now....
