Taillight replacement - R1 or similar?

Post by pbear62 » Wed Jan 26, 2011 2:43 pm

Hi guys, I've been thinking about fitting a tidier/different/smaller taillight to my TRX - have done the "search" thing & saw way back in '06, Killerwhale made an inquiry about whether a '98/99 R1 light is a straight swap option. Has anyone done this or do you know if it is?
What I want if possible, is something that fits without cutting up the original rear bodywork at all & that looks a bit more integrated than the standard light. Any info please?

As far as I`m aware there is no `straight swap` option but places like Ebay abound with aftermarket light units, many LED type so will never blow a bulb and consume far less current too.
M&P (if you`re in the UK) Edit, just noticed you`re in Aus.
has a huge range and even if the dimensions are not shown,(many are) their team are more than happy to measure things up for you and get back to you via email.

I`m sure some of the Aussie members will put you in the direction of aftermarket light retailers in Aus. [-o<

I have a r1 98 one fitted to my trx, I trimmed the lens down a bit refixed with silicon and sprayed the lens black (left the 2 circles red, underneath clear for the number plate) . its not a straight swap ( the fixing require a little adjustment ) but fairly easy to do.

I've been thinking that the a/m SV lights, with indicators built in would be bloody brilliant, not sure if it's possible though...

I have an r1 tail light that you can have for cheap (+ postage) if you want it....
Understeer - when you hit the fence with the front of the bike.
Oversteer - when you hit the fence with the rear of the bike.
Horsepower - how fast you hit the fence.
Torque - how far you take the fence with you.

I took a few pics of r1 rear light on my bike today.
I prised off the lens and cut it back about 1cm (with a dremel) to make it fit flusher in the seat unit sprayed it black and siliconed it back together.

I needed to make a couple of little brackets so it lined up correctly

Its as easy as that. :D

I used an aftermarket LED on my TRX and it fitted very nicely, have had it on for a year and no issues. Its sits in nice and snug, you just need to make a plate up to mount it as the one supplied was crap.
