speedo stopped working...

Post by albonator316 » Mon Aug 25, 2008 7:58 am

I was filling up at the fuel station and when i took off noticed the speedo had stopped working. Was working fine before stopping for fuel.
Is there a common problem and fix for this? new speedo dive and cable maybe?
everything else on dash is working rpm etc.

Are you sure you were moving or were you just imagining it? Got to watch those petrol fumes. :D

Could be the cable, unscreew it at the wheel end and check the end of the inner drive wire's not broken off, it should stick out past the outer about 10-15mm. If it looks intact a quick way to check the speedo's still working is to grip it in the chuck of a battery drill and spin it slowly!! to see if it drives the needle round the dial(not sure if clockwise and anti, so try both) and then:

If your speedo works:
Take the front wheel out and after you pull the drive unit away check the tab washer that sits between the drive unit and the wheel/wheel bearing, its about 70mm across and has a pair tabs on its outer edge that point outwards locating in slots in the wheel(hidden by a rubber seal you can pop out carefully), and two more that are bent up to locate in slots on the speedo drive unit(these are the ones that normally break cutting off the drive). You'll have to carefully remove the rubber seal that holds it in place if it needs replacing, a new washer should be £4ish from your local Yammy dealer. If this tab washer looks ok then I'd suspect the driver unit, £58ish new but I'd check ebay first. Hell I might even have one kicking around you can have for a few quid but, my bet is that the tab washer's to blame.

If your speedo don't work:
Check the other end of the drive cable/wire(top fairing off). If that looks fine then could be a failed speedo (£££!!), I'd re-check everything else before replacing that tho'.

Good luck with it!

Jim.

 Get your grandparents to drive to where you want to go and follow them, you don't need a speedo for the MOT. No speeding tickets either.
