Tools, what do you carry on board?

Hi there,

I've never really carried much in the way of tools with any of my bikes, but I do feel naked because of it. I do all my servicing myself and have a range of tools in my workshop that would envy most mechanics. I have prepared tool kits on longer rides but struggle to draw the line between whats needed and whats not essential. I have the original tool kit that came with the bike, it's like new, never used, (execpt for the shock adjuster). On older bikes a on board kit would comprise of open enders and flat heads, with modern stuff its mostly allen keys and socket sets.

So, my question is: What do you guys carry with you on your trx? or better yet what tools do you have in your bike right now?

Enjoy,
Martin

if I'm going on a trip all I take is multitool, allen keys and a couple of sockets - I can pretty much strip the bike down with that

oh, and duck tape and cable ties

Along with the basic tool kit that comes with the bike I carry a folding type multitool, allen keys, a stick of chemical metal(the putty type that you kneed together) and a puncture kit with C02 canisters. If I'm going on a long trip I've been known to carry a little 175ml bottle of oil too....
I do get breakdown cover with my insurance too, although i've never needed to call on it before, touch wood! 8-[

AA card!

Yes, I should bring tools, but I'd end up losing them. Nothing very critical is likely to loosen up or fall off, and if anything major blows up, I am not going to strip the engine / drivetrain by the roadside. Er, or even at home!

More to the point, as I use my road bikes for commuting and a bit of shopping, I'm never more than 20 miles from home. Plus, the TRX has never actually broken down in 11 years of ownership. OK, it did fail to start recently, but that was a shit bit of wiring of the alarm system, which the AA man rewired for me in 10 minutes. Much better than I would have done, and I wouldn't have been carrying a multimeter and a wiring crimper/cutter wossname anyway.

The more you carry the less you need! I carry a bum bag full which i keep in the tail section along with a 1metre security chain and a small can of lube.

Well, Dave is looking for some hot motorcycling action with his underseat whips and lube. Quid pro quo, as they say!

:D Big screwdriver and a big hammer along with a big adjutable wrench, just great for undoing a stubborn 8mm bolt.
