Trx brake pads/discs

Hi all,
hopefully there's enough of us on here that someone will know. My rex is a 96 model with bluespots on it, does anyone know what brakepads these take - i.e. R1, R6, TRX or what?
Also one of my discs is rooted so I need replacements. The one's on it are 'Braking' floaters, but looking on the net the only ones I can find are ABM wavies on austreetfighter.com.au, but they are $690 a pair :shock: . Any ideas on other brands and where to get them?
Also also, any favoured pad brands?

Kirk Take a pad to a bike shop and compare it with existing r1 or r6 pads , it won't be trx and ask'm about braking disks . you don't always save shopping the net and I rather shop locally where you can always get advice and help , I had no trouble when I chased braking discs and the sales girl from the braking distributer had a TRX herself

Hopefully Honky or Phuk (maybe some of the others) got some of the mass emails I sent out a while back and will check in here. They have accounts.

I can't help you, never used the Blue Spots (JP models has brembo...). :(

Last time I bought any pads for my bluespot calipers, I bought Carbon lorraine pads and I recall checking that the R6 and R1 pads were the same part.

I'm not sure if they are always the same though, there's a chance that some suppliers might use different friction materials I guess. But I'm pretty sure the answer is that any early R1 or R6 pad will fit (so long as they are for the bluespot capliers - I think the later R1's use different calipers).

Hi Kirk,

Any R6 or R1 pads prior to the radial capiller will fit. All blue spot and gold spot capillers share the same dimensions. The interesting thing is - the original 4 piston Sumitomo TRX callipers' pads actually offer more pad (friction) area than the famous Bluespots! I'm in the process of refitting the originals for road riding because even though they are not as good at transmitting built up heat, I believe they offer more feel. On the other hand - at the race track the originals are prone to fade and don't offer nearly as much consistency. I guess it depends how you ride and where you ride. :?

Those Sumitomo (a.k.a. Yamambo in Japan) calipers were standard issue on all Yamaha sport bikes and racers from around 1985~1988 (and beyond for several models). They are what I raced with on my TZR, FZR and '88 TZ. The main problem besides the heat buildup Triton mentioned (we didn't know that then) is that they are a soft alloy and have flex. Grab them, and squeeze the lever hard (especially with braided lines) and tell me you can't feel them spread apart.

That said, we raced with them and learned to use them. They aren't as bad as everyone claims but yes, they are old tech...

For feel, I'm convinced 90% of that comes from the master. Put a good pump on the top (Brembo Radial... yes, I know the song is getting old) and you will be amazed. The heat and fade issue, you probably wouldn't notice it anywhere but on the track.

I don't know if you can source the number or not, but the '88 Yamaha Genuine TZ250 pads were the best you could get then. Worlds better than all the aftermarket pads. Just a thought.

as far as feel goes, check this site out for master cylinder ratios.
The bluespots measure 30mm(x4 pistons) and the master cylinder (on mine at least) is 5/8 inch. according to the chart a good feel is 27:1, a firm feel is 23:1 and my combo rocks in at 13:1!! I think I'm going to find a 12mm master cyl from a wreckers!

I fitted an R6 master cylinder with my Bluespots, having previously run with the standard TRX master cylinder, and the difference in feel makes a real difference. Definitely it is worth the change.

Hey Kirk, I dunno about the caliper/pad question as I have brembos on my Japanese 95 but I managed to find Aprilia Future discs on eBay that fit perfectly, they cost me US$115 + shipping for a pair!!

I weighed them and they are roughly 100gms lighter than the worn OEM discs I took off. That's 100gms per disc!! Aluminum center carrier in anodized gold finish too which look wicked! Non-floating but can be converted.

My master cylinder is a 16mm brembo unit from an rsvr and the feel from a full brembo front end is incredible!
One finger braking here I come!!

How long have you had those Futura discs K9, and have you had any trouble with warp? Last time I looked into that option a lot of the Aprilia guys were complaining that the discs warped really quickly, though the TRX being lighter and slower it might not be a problem for us. I bought a slightly used pair anyway though for £50 ready for when the warp on these Yamaha discs gets too much for the MOT man.. :roll:
'95 4NX with K&N filter, Motad Venom cans, YSS PD valves, Ohlins fork springs, 530 C+S, Green CDI, 11/16 radial master cylinder, +30mm jack up dog bones. Enjoyable money pit.
