:D At 4 o'clock this afternoon, Avebury wasn't happening!, you know how it is, a long run tomorrow, so fettle the bike to make sure all is good. Oiling the chain something didnt feel right. CLUNK! What the hell was that, large nut has just fell off from under the front sprocket cover. Pull the covers off, there sits the sprocket grinning at me without the nut on. Check the nut and find that it has 2 coils of thread left.
Now its panic mode, where the hell am I going to get a nut that size with metric thread at 4 o'clock on Friday afternoon, the day before the bank holiday weekend.
2 hours later I have resigned myself to not going, 2 bike shops visited, both can order it for me, and the nut and bolt place was shut.
Standing in the garage when the proverbial light bulb comes on.
Did you know that a Suzuki RM 250 from about 1983 has the same nut holding the sprocket on, no neither did i but it does and its on the Trx now.
So glad I checked the chain in the first place, and so glad I bought the RM project in the second place

:shock: eeeeeek, lucky you noticed it, could have been messy

i've had that happen on my mk1 TDM, but thats the first time i've heard of the nut coming loose on the 4UN/4TX engines

did you fit a washer and lock the tabs over?

:? Washer was on with the tabs bent over, but it has some of the inner locking splines missing, this may be the reason it came loose. I had to use this again as the RM washer is a different size, so couldnt use. Good old Locktite glue should hold it for the time being, and the part of the washer with the splines missing is now the part bent over.

if its the same as the TDM i think i've got a spare washer and maybe even a spare nut
i'll try and dig em out tomorrow

ps. if you are coming to Foxes diner there is a big bike shop right next door ;)

:( Both the bike shops I visited just shook their heads saying that they dont have a need to carry spare nuts that size in stock.

And I will be following you Martin coz I don't know where I'm going

Seems to me that most bike shops carry very little these days. Maybe it's cos of mail order suppliers, but they don't even stock consumables.

gratz on the aussie way of "making it work now" method !!

you tend to find many bike shops only carry the "popular" brand of things. IE stuff that will move off the shelf within that month.

Such as tyres for most sports bikes / cruisers.. How many places carry a huge array of dirt bike tyres or a sand paddle tyre ? same with after market exhaust.. They almost always have the 600 - 1000cc range that will slip on, but slightly older bikes like the TRX they can always get for you easy, but give it a day or 2 for order / delivery time.
