New Project

Just thought I would post up here for the people that might be interested.

I am embarking on a new project road bike.

I have the spare frame from my old TRX which has been sat in a corner of the garage for the last 2 years. I was going to get rid of it as I cant see me building up a new trx, but after much deliberation and thought I have decided to build a new road bike from it, and I have bought this as a doner bike:

Its fair to say the limit of the percentage of trx in this project at the end will be minimal, probably limited to the headstock. I have done a bit of a mock up for what I want to end up with:

sort of like a poor mans ariel ace.

I'll update this thread as I go.

shouldnt be any bigger than the TRX project.

I am going to use the rear end off a ducati monster, and the tank from a fazer 1000, so I am cutting out a lot of fabrication work.

so... I've been slowly working away in the background on this.

Technically, its a TRX850, based on the headstock...

fuel tank needs a lot of work as its designed to be hidden behind a load of bodywork. I have an old fazer 1000 tank that I am going to chop in half down the middle and attempt to make a hybrid tank that fits correctly.

god I love your projects, the ambition is sensational and (in the proven case of the MT build) the output is remarkable

I will be following this thread.

This project is very interesting, the VFR is excellent, but a comfortable touring bike. I rode one, liked it, but wished Honda had not been so sterile and sensible. I daresay that you are building the bike blackbird owners dream of

You might want to share your build on blackbird forum

Keep it up Coxy, you have a big fan here in Sydney

Can you use a DIY home build frame legally on the road?

yeah. worst case we have a process in the UK called single vehicle approval (SVA) where you can have it all checked and registered as a new bike.

only issue I have with that is what registration plate I will be given. There are rules that state to get an age related plate you have to use so much of the original vehicle, however this is specifically car related and I cant find the rules for bikes. if i cant get an age related plate it will have to go onto a Q plate, and I dont want that.

all these trike conversions run the plate of the original bike and you could argue its a completely different vehicle. I suppose its a grey area as to where the term modification stops - no one bats an eyelid when countless people have chopped off the back end of their TRX's to fit custom rear ends. Essentially, I have just done the same, but a bit closer to the headstock.

Ugh, definitely not a Q-plate  I see. I'm a bit suprised that such things are not strictly regulated in the UK.
It is here in the NL!
