He said he had had it running up to temp during the week before I picked it up. Reckons the camchain tensioner "looks like it's had issues and one of the cams was tight". Any way, he is going to put it right and even though I am not happy he actually seems like a bloke who cares and is desperate to make amends so actually he may end up with a repeat customer, simply because he's dealt with it in the right way by calling me and accepting that he touched it last so he will sort it out. Fair play really.alextrx850 wrote:The mechanic may not really admit the real reason due to being embarrassed, but I'm amazed the engine wasn't started after the service to be sure of all being well..dandywarhol wrote:Don't get why it would need new camshafts - more like bent valves if the chain jumped

Go have a look while he has the cams out of the head. If 1 cam was tight it would have galled the cam and the softer alloy face in the head.
Get him to plastigauge the cam to cap clearance.
Clearance ... 0.020-0.054mm
Check eng (G) 4-9 in the manual

Cheers Cobba, but the workshop is 20 miles away and I work in London, even further away so no chance during the week. May pop in on Saturday and surprise him though. I just hope he makes it right again, not after beasting him as anyone can make a mistake and may be I should have tried it myself.cobbadiggabuddyblooo wrote:Go have a look while he has the cams out of the head. Re: Aargh - is it knackered??
Maybe suggest it to him that you can possibly access parts through one of the trx forums. Let him know you'll work with him as communication is the key as they say. Might save him a little money and you'll know what your getting too.
Your right though as anyone can and do make mistakes, I'm sure we are all guilty of that.
Hope all goes well

Well, it's back. Sounds noisy at the top end. He did point out that fitting the R6 shock plus adaptor has lowered the rear end so I'll look at changing the dog bones for some shorter ones.

Re: Aargh - is it knackered??
i will try mate, thought I might bob it over to Mincehead as he's a) nearby and b) knows them much more than I do. Pretty much decided now to move all the decent bits to the spare bike which has rotten suspension but a peach of an engine and has only done 20,000 miles or so. Get that MOT'd and sell this one, which makes a mockery of paying £250 to have the valve clearances done on it, then £40 for the chain tensioner guide etc etcdandywarhol wrote:Could you post an audio file of it running?

Re: Aargh - is it knackered??
Cam is probably slapping around in the journal.
If he has had to replace the cam because he over tightened the cap my bet is your up for a new head and he won't admit to that one.
I have a spare head in exactly the same condition and it's only good for the valves now. I tried cleaning it up and there is no hope in hell of keeping it within clearance tollerence.

Re: Aargh - is it knackered??
I'm not quite so quick to condemn him, a TRX with newly done clearances (to the upper spec) sounds like a bag of nails, or at least mine certainly did. It's definitely valve train noise though, no heavy knocking sounds.
Sadly mine is relatively quiet now, which is a much worse scenario. Sigh.

Re: Aargh - is it knackered??
Mav, would you take the bike back to the same guy again? Now I'm in the same area, mine is running fine but will probably need doing soon (just coming up to 40,000). My logic being that he now knows how badly you can get it wrong so won't have the apprentice do the job and make sure its done right.
Sounds like its pretty easy to get wrong if you don't know exactly what you are doing, every chance a.n.other spanner man could make the the same mistake, atleast this guy sounds like gives a damn.
