Is a TRX done 73,210 miles (117,820 kms) too high?

Hi guys,

I have been casually looking for a tidy TRX on and off for over a year and following the local sales.

Most in New Zealand are the 1995 model (red with white frame) and speedometer displays up to 180kms.
Have the Japanese imports been detuned, or power restricted in some way?
As TRX bikes in other countries tend to have speedos reading up to 260kms or 300kms

Anyway, main question is I've seen a UK import which is a 2000 model, so must be one of the last to leave the showrooms.

From photos and talking to the guy, it sounds like it is very tidy but has done quite a lot more kms than what I would prefer.

The speedometer is in miles: 73,210 miles (which would be 117,820 kms).
It states the bike is in good all round condition and has been serviced regularly and goes extremely well, was a daily rider to work for 4+ years so that is why.
It is mostly stock apart from some aftermarket pipes and blue spot brakes.

Your advice is appreciated on what to look for, and ask the guy.

Gooday Ian, it's hard to address your question with a concrete answer..... there are mainly Japanese imports for sale and the prices seem to be quietly dropping for all TRX's here in NZ. The mileages are generally not high either..... Imports are not very different from the NZ or UK sold models. The main differences are: frame, wheel and engine colour (Black), white rev counter, speed limited to 180km (and that's not a great disadvantage as they would start to gasp past that speed), brembo brake calipers (that I don't believe stop them any better) .... that's it, from memory. Certainly a low mileage bike is nice but that depends on what your paying for a bike. Generally the engines are long lasters unless they run out of oil, which they do have a reputation for using and is mainly due to being 'run in' too softly, causing the bores to glaze (my TRX previously consumed oil till I scuffed up the bores with #240 wet and dry. ) ..... I would steer clear of engines that have been tampered with for sure, ie. opened up, .... the later model TRX's (past 1998 I think) had better inlet valves but I believe that the stretch and wear issues of these valves, were more likely the result of engine abuse ..... watch for salt damage on the UK imported bikes. My UK imported TRX had salt corrosion..... hope this info helps. Cheers Kevin

I believe he said it doesn't use oil between servicing and runs strong, no rattles, etc.
So it could be worth a trip for me to go down and look at it.

If serviced regularly, are there any other engine things that need or should be done at certain intervals?
eg: at 120,000 kms such and such should be replaced/adjusted, etc

I will find out if it has any salt damage but was quite low kms when the first owner imported it so wouldn't think it would have been ridden in Winter over in UK.

Hi Ian ..... valve clearances are to be checked at 24000km intervals, plugs occasionally but iridiums fix that issue and give crisper performance The valve gear does make a bit of noise by modern standards, but (as with any bike with a high mileage) listen for timing chain noise...... there's a chap on this site who has ridden up an amazingly high mileage on his TRX, without any rebuilds, by just doing maintenance, and by not thrashing his stead.......have a look for him in previous posts. He periodically appears with news of his ever increasing mileage..... cheers

Not sure if bike is still for sale, but will remember those things to watch out for.
