Re: every three months fuel tank cleaning

Loud Pipes save Lives wrote:the mechanic who is teaching us "wet behind the ears" folks at our motocycle maintence course suggests that every three months when his petrol tank is on reserve and is only running on fumes and the riders enthursiam.

he puts a 1 ltre of metho in the fuel tank.

then he shacks the hell out of the bike and this ensure all the mositure and dead animals at the bottom of the fuel tank are lose and doesnt stay stuck on the bottom of the fuel tank.

is he talking crap or does this make sense and should be something that must be done every three months
Over the years when I had a bike that was not garaged or I was living in a high humidity area, I use to put a cap or 2 of Metho in the tank every 3 or 4 tankfills to keep the moiture within the tank at bay.

This was a practice I did quite often with the Guzzi (metho). Always had fuelling problems with that bike with the dell'orto carbs. When I switched them over to FCRs the problems all went away!

Only ever put metho in the TRX occasionally, and a litre seems too much. I've been told by many mechanics that a cupful would do the trick. 'Spose it doesn't matter as it all gets burnt off anyway. Another trick is to drain your float bowls regularly. You'll be amazed at the amount of water and crud that lives in the bottom of your carbies. I did this yesterday and you'd be amazed at how much better my bike was running afterwards.

Well, my Factory Pro jet & emulsion kit is on its way from the US via Wolf Racing in Brisvegas. Should be here early next week. Bike is booked in at Bikebiz to get that fitted and a new front Pilot Power ('cos I'm a lazy sod) next Friday, so looks like everything is lining up well and good for Walcha.

Fuel economy

I've had my TRX a few months. Previous owner claimed to get about 200km to reserve. Since then, I'm getting the same or even less, riding around town (13km/L). Went to Canberra for a weekend and cranked it out on the Hume Highway. She was then getting up to 250km to reserve (20km/L). But clearly, this is scheissen-hausen compared to the average mentioned here. I've been informed this could be the dreaded emulsion tubes. So will pursue this angle. However, the bike only has 40k on the clock.
Incidentally, recently changed air filter. It had the K&N, which is going back to the Yamaha standard. A previous owner has drilled holes in the box, so maybe he thought of trying to bring more air into the box...

When I bought my TRX, I also had the problem with those emulsion tubes. I did 1 ltr to 13km and puffing up black smoke!
So with new ones fitted and some Dynojet needles it's a new go for at least 20.000km. Not very hard to replace, but I was in the position to change them with some help from the dynorun guy, cause I was there for a run :D

After the run and all new tubes and needles my TRX was as smooth as a baby on the gashandle. I could now drive at a constant speed, without getting an on/off reaction. My fuel consumption went down to 1 ltr every 23km  . My record is 1 ltr to 27km, holding on to the maximum speed on the roads I drove on.

Now, my consumption is (still) not under 1ltr to 21, with mixed driving, but still hard on the gas when it's possible. At 320km (normally) I'm going on reserve. Once I did a near 400km in total, when I had to refill, just in case

The pressure in my front tyre is 2,25 bar and the rear is 2,25 as well. For track days I normally go to 2,1 or 2 bar front and rear . My bike is fitted with the Bridgestone BT014's.

Or it's too rich.

Worn emulsion tubes in the carbs are a common cause of excessive fuel consumption.

I think mine will go something like 170 miles before reserve

I don't know what my REX does now, after going to Stage3 Tovami/Dynojet, 170 main jets and separate K&N airfilters... :?

But I'll let you all know when I do have some information :D .

120miles out of 12 litres (so that's bout 45mpg is it not?)

and that's unfaired and doing 90mph+ most of the time with a set of worn out carbs
