Post by rij » Mon Oct 07, 2013 7:44 pm

Hi I have a 51 plate tdm 850 4tx the cranks just gone pop wheres the best place to get parts?
so far I've found Aj sutton which seems good for some things but horrific for other parts!

any other places to get bits?

I need

con rod
piston rings valve seals
big end shells
crank re-grind
3rd gear

Can anyone help? i need to keep the cost down as the bikes only with £1500

Thanks Rich

Have recently been through a similar engine failure myself.

Chris Applebee in East Anglia (Google) does TRX crank regrinds with oversize big end shells. About £175 with shells and p&p. Highly recommended.

Rods may be more difficult. I was lucky and was given a pair by a generous sympathetic forum member. Small ends on mine were oval and scored.

Valve seals are £50 a set (genuine) and crank shells about £20 per journal. Gaskets and seals add another £150 (head gasket is £50 alone).

I ended up buying a blown motor with good mains and rebuilt one good'un from 2 duff ones. Lots of spares sitting around but no rods or g'box I am afraid. Might have a pair of TRX pistons with rings but these are different from TDM pistons I believe (TDM may be dished)?

A used lump will be £350-500 and even then you never know the condition of it internally so a rebuild can be the best approach. There again if you are paying labour, the cost goes through the roof.

Hope s'thing works out for you.

Hello thanks for your reply!

No labour costs thank god! as I'm fairly handy myself, I just can't believe how much the parts are which is just i criminal and going to drive most people to scraping bikes!
I also hate the idea of yet another older bike just getting broken for spares, everyhing is always repairable to me.

thanks for the help i will keep looking around for bits and see what the best plan is!

G'day Rich,

Partshark.com in the US is a good source, depending upon your exchange rates back & forth... However, you need to buy the parts for the early model TDM as they never had the TRX over there. Check the part numbers of course.

It was good for us when we were above the US dollar, still probably cheaper than the local dealers.

I have also used Partzilla, hey seem to have good prices, but haven't compared them to Partshark.

Good luck with the rebuild.
