Shell V Power 98.
Can't know if this has been posted before, but what with the discussion re types of fuel used I thought that this could be of interest.
It seems to fall into line with the suggestion that using 98 octane, your bike (and especially carbed bikes) generally is a waste of money as 95 octane will do just as well if not better.

Never used anything else, swedish 95 has to much ethanol in it...many tap membranes has suffered from this me thinks.ekoja wrote:Can't know if this has been posted before, but what with the discussion re types of fuel used I thought that this could be of interest.

Re: Shell V Power 98.
I won't use V Power in any of my bikes. There is a lot of talk lately about V Power causing a lot of issues with the fuel systems of bikes. I have heard this from numerous riders and mechanics alike. It's probably more specific to later model bikes, but why take a risk.
Apparently it is to do with some of the additives they use in V Power.
Before hearing this I did use a few tanks of V Power(out of necessity)in my TRX and it didn't run well. Coincidence or not, who knows, I'm unsure.
Apart from that couple of tanks, I have used BP Ultimate exclusively for years. Never have problems with it. And I only ever use fuel from high turnover petrol stations.

BP has also been my preference and found it ran better. I had a mate who worked on shutdowns in refineries and he made me aware of the difference in the crude oil between BP and shell. A lot of The shell crude being sourced from a different environment than the cleaner crude from BP.

BP Ultimate is my preferred brew for all the vehicles I own.
shell seems to be allergic to most yamaha bikes.

Use mostly Mobil 98 or Caltex Vortex 98 and ever so occasionally BP. Seems to run the best on Caltex

Re: Shell V Power 98.
There was a section on that site especially concerning bikes, I have copied it for those who may not have seen it.
"Shell V-Power - 98 Octane Premium Fuel What is improved performance? Shell V-Power vs. Shell Fuel Economy Formula Is it right for my bike?
Most motorbikes which run on unleaded petrol will be able to use Shell V-Power. It s unique formulation can help protect the engine, and enhance responsiveness. Why not give it a try and see if you experience the difference?
If your motorbike doesn't run on unleaded petrol, you can help keep the engine cleaner for longer with Shell Advance motorcycle oils.
Compatibility
Although Shell V-Power is compatible with most bikes there may be a requirement to make slight adjustments to the engine such as changing spark plugs, and reducing the size of carburettor jets, or a combination of both.
Bikes used mainly for city running (and therefore subject to considerable stop-start running) are likely to need such adjustments when changed to Shell V-Power.
Some fine adjustments may also be required to ensure when the bike is hot it runs smoother and with better overall performance and in particular there is more power at the top end.
Bikes that run well on Shell V-Power without any of these changes are usually fitted with fuel injection and advanced fuelling systems. Shell recommends that all bike and parts modifications suggested on this website are made in consultation with your bike’s manufacturer."

I run my TRX on BP 95 octane, as I'm unable to notice any difference between that and 98. Also going on the advise of the guru 'Spanner Man' from Australian Motorcycle Trader as he recommends 95 octane for carbied bike like our TRX's.

Re: Shell V Power 98.
No difference between BP 95 and 98 for our TRX's performance wise unless they are in a very high state of tune. 98 (as in Ultimate) should just run a bit cleaner.xxr55 wrote:I run my TRX on BP 95 octane, as I'm unable to notice any difference between that and 98. Re: Shell V Power 98.
Unless an engine has a knock sensor then it is pointless using higher octane fuels other than standard pump petrol, which the engine was designed around. A knock sensor will optimise ignition timing to the fuel being used, without one any extra performance or higher ignition tempreture potential is pretty much lost. Even a lot of fuel injected bike don't have them, apart from some BMW's.

Re: Shell V Power 98.
I have only ever run standard in my REX ,that's whats it's designed to run on and that is what mine runs. I run 95 in the RC8 or 98 because that's what the manual says to run in it and it pings to buggery if I don't , but I see no value in giving the already greedy oil companies 10 cents a litre extra if I don't have to.

Re: Shell V Power 98.
Just my two cents worth, but I recall an article in an Aussie bike magazine which stated that Shell V Power was gumming up carbs/jets.
I'll be running BP 98 Ultimate solely, only because I'm increasing compression as far as I can safely go.
