Newbie to a TRX...sort of.

Newbie to a TRX...sort of.
Hi all,
Been reading this forum for quite some time now, and thought it was time to join in the fun !!
Firstly, I have a UK TRX, 2000 on a 'W'. Guess it was one of the ones hanging around the showrooms for a while.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, a mate of mine had this bike from new, and this year decided to trade down to a Buell !! something called a lightning I think. For me the Buell is a bit small, Im 6' 2'' & 17 stone...a bit like a roller skate really. I had a short go on it and it nearly shock me eyes out with the vibration........ So, he offered the TRX to me...having looked after it for a year some time ago when he got done for DD, the little I rode it (and i think i rode it more than him !!), I thought why not. It was cheap...very cheap. 1 owner just a nats over 5000 miles, totally original and I new all its history well. Unfortunaley or crimainlally, when i arrived at his house, I had to drag the thing out of the garden. Brakes all seized, battery dead, and looked very, very sorry for its self. Nevermind I sighed, a bit of TLC and it will be as good as new.
And thats the short version !!.
TRX is all up and running, R1 calipers, braided lines etc...partially stripped and cleaned. Fully serviced, all fluids, new tyres (This bike still had the original michelin MACDAMS), shims checked, race cans, and now runs like a dream. That was almost 7 months ago, and after completing all that I stuck it to the back of the garage. Maybe it will be worth something some year. See RD500's are fetching very good money now and good TRX's are getting harder to find every year.
Unfortunatley, or perhaps ''luckily', I have two other bikes, an R1 (a well used toy) and a Honda transalp (Used for commuting into London most days), so the TRX sat at the back of the garage,..... until yesterday. This is a waste I thought, wheeled it out, starts first time on the button and off I go. 4 hours later I returned home to complete some of the DIY I had been meaning to do for some time, after getting a bollocking from the wife for being gone so long !!. But what a laught I had...steady at first but then started giving it some stick around the lanes. This is pretty quick I thought..not R1 quick, but quick enought in its own way.
So this morning, instead of grabbing the Transalp for my commute, I thought I will take the TRX. (Besides the bloody thing was in the way, at the front of the garage). Glad I did really, this things goes in traffic where the transalp never will, and with race cans it wakes up the dozy car drivers at 200 yards. So the Transalp is relegated to the back of the garage for the time being... or until they salt the roads. Cant wait until tomorrow.....
Anyway, can't say much more really apart from ''Great Site'', actaully ''Bloody Great Site !! . Keep up the good work and I hope to give some input when/where I can.

Matt, Welcome. I used to live in wickford. Back in my Enduro riding days. In laws still live in Shotgate.
My TRX just clicked over to 30,000 miles coming home from Scarborough Gold cup at the weekend. Ive done about 22,000 in about 4 years.

Greg, I think the TRX is a little bit more usable than the R1 in 90% of situations !!
 , but you really cant beat pure power to really excite !! Its one of those bikes,In my opinion, that you have to own once in your life....trouble is every time I ride it, I enjoy it so much that I cant see myself selling it for a long time to come.......
The good thing about the TRX is that its different......different from the norm.
As the weather has been pretty crap the last few days, I used the Transalp for the commute to London...cant bare to see the TRX getting dirty...perhaps Im getting to attached to it already
 .
The Flat Bars seem a good idea, but I think I will save that mod to when my body says no more to the head down position...
Its good to see someone knows of Wickford...changed alot over the last few years, but there are some good lanes quite close by, which are pretty quite most of the time, especilly early on sunday morning...perfect TRX territory.
Thinking of doing some more work on the TRX over the winter, maybe powder coating the rims and upgarding the front forks. I noticed one was weeping a little yesterday, so I guess they are both in need of a refurb.

Sorry for the late replie, I have been away on buisness and getting very little time to view the net,
Anyway, heres a photo of my R1, a 2001 model. A little special and as said before, great to ride in the right conditions !!

I have no ''before'' pictures of the TRX, but here is one after Its been resurected from a garden !!

Not a great photo of the TRX, but the best I have at the mo.
I had a little trouble uploading the photos from 'Photobucket', had to resize them several times to get them to view correctly, perhaps i was doing something wrong....
Any recommendations on the front forks, as they are due for a rebuild over the winter ?

Without a doubt the oil in the forks will be past it's best.
Suggest oil change as a minimum - maybe stiffer springs or Hagon progressive springs
