how much movement on the front sprocket is too much??

pulled the front sprocket cover off last night and aside from being caked up with shit the sprocket can move a fair amount it's hard to quantify, maybe 1/16th of a turn or even a bit less... but either way, it's more then i'd hope to see...

Sprocket play is only a problem if you can move the sprocket up and down or front to rear. in the way you describe thats just the gear moving and the dogs hitting the gear their engaged with.
Ride through the red mist, you will soon find the blue haze.

yes i understand that, but how much movement is too much... i understand that gears must have a certain clearance to function properly, but if they're worn or a bearing has failed somewhere along the line then that movement is translated into extra rotational freeplay on the front sprocket...

and when you say "dogs" are you saying these bikes have a dog engagement setup and not synchos???

Are you saying the sprocket moves 1/16th turn on the output shaft?

no no... sprocket and output shaft move together...

what ever the noise i'm getting is, i suspect that it's before the clutch, because it makes the same whining noise regardless of whether i have the clutch in or not... any way of testing for shaft play with out totally stripping the bike?

had my bike about 2 months after i purshised it 96 Japanese import, riding one day with mates and noticed this big miss in it. felt like chain was missing a tooth about 4500 to 5500 turned out to be something in the gearbox, to this day still dont no what it was., fixed under warranty, thank christ, 3,000 dollars AUS . so some of the more intellegant people on here might be able to tell me what it was. sounds a bit like your problem. CHEERS BURN.

starting to think that perhaps the noise i'm hearing is just gear drive noise... looking through the manual and it appears that most of the gears inside the engine (oil pump, balance shafts etc) are all straight cut which = noise... i was listening to the bike closely tonight, and it appears that most of the noise is coming from the lower RHS crank case region, however there is a fair bit of noise coming from around the upper cam chain region... what's the service life like on the cam chain/guides???

is there anyone around SE QLD who's got the time to let me come around to just listen to their bike? i just wanna know what noise is normal and what is not...

EDIT: OH, and what joins the crank shaft to the clutch? is there an intermediate shaft or does the crankshaft drive directly to the ring gear on the outer edge of the clutch basket?

cheers
