Damping

Post by slow codger » Tue Aug 21, 2007 4:11 pm

:D Just fitted European spec fork springs, courtesy of Martin Young, and then tried to work out if they were level by using the markings on the adjusters. After I thought they were about the same, I decided to use a vernier, and you've guessed it they were out, now sorted and level.

:-k ... you what?

by how much?

 the forks are joind at the bottom by an axle, so spring rate and preload is the sum of the two and a millimetre or two diference at the individual adjusters makes no difference. It is common for racers needing to optimise spring rate to use a different rate spring in each fork leg. For trackdays I use .9kg/mm in one and .95kg/mm ( as .925kg/mm springs are not made) in the other without any ill effects.

BTW the "euro spec spring" is still way off the mark unless you weigh 55kg, then the back will be oversprung.

Now with 140,000 on the clocks, X-mas tree didn't kill it & I still love it.

:D not saying it would make any difference, as you say they are joined at the axle, and a small amount out would be compensated between the 2. However the lines on the adjuster which appeared to be level when eyeballed were in fact nearly a mm out. Shades of my old Triumph there, although that was at the crankase where of course the oil ran out.
