How filled is full...
Today I did the first oil and oil filter change since buying my trx a few months back. Everything was as to be expected, although the oil was a bit worse then I hoped.
The strangest thing was the amount of oil that came out, my haynes manual says for a full oil and filter change it should take 3.6l of oil, which is about what I put in. Upon measuring the dirty oil I took out, there was 6.4L OF IT!!!
How they had even managed to fit that much in is beyond me. This dose however explain the problem with the sight glass, I assumed because it was matte black it was covered in crap or it had been replaced with something non transparent for some unknown reason. It turns out it was full of black oil, all of the time regardless of the angle of the bike.

Understeer - when you hit the fence with the front of the bike.
Oversteer - when you hit the fence with the rear of the bike.
Horsepower - how fast you hit the fence.
Torque - how far you take the fence with you.

Sounds like who ever sold the bike to you didn't walm the bike up first and check the oil after a quick 5minute ride . I could just imagine the crankcase pressure with a dry sump turned into a wet one as that's the only place it can store the excess. I bet the bike revs a little freer now and check your exhaust to note any change in colour and texture.

Wow! Sump & oil tank full I guess...so much for a dry sump! 4.2L is total if replacing oil filter.Adrian9912 wrote:Today I did the first oil and oil filter change since buying my trx a few months back. Everything was as to be expected, although the oil was a bit worse then I hoped.

You don't have a stuck float needle do you?

My Haynes manual says 3.6 for oil filter and 4.2 for a "full engine overhaul"? As far as the float needle goes I would have no idea.M.V. wrote:Wow! The oil wasn't actually put in by the guy who owned the bike previously, it was done by a supposedly "professional" motorbike dealer and workshop. I'm guessing he didn't check it though as well.
After riding around today I actually haven't noticed any real changes to the bike...

3.6L .. You will find two drains for an oil change ..one by the oil filter.3.6L and one for the oil in the engine sump it'self that holds 600ml in the base of the motor(LH side).
A magnetic bung is a handy item in there to contain any metal finding it's way to the engine sump.
Did the oil smell of fuel by any chance?? This has been an issue one some TRX's with fuel weeping past the tap and vaccum pump into the carb's and as mentioned by MV. Then past the float overflowing into the pot. Seeping past the rings into the sump..

I didn't put my nose right in it, but I couldn't smell fuel just handling the oil so I would guess its not doing that.
Quite a bit of gunk left in the drain pan after emptying it too

I don't think that this is just an isolated incident or dealers not knowing how to change the oil in a TRX.
Though not as bad as the case above, a local dealer changed the oil and filter on mine and I spent a good couple of hours yesterday taking the two pints of extra oil out of the bike. It's still very slightly overfilled, but I simply ran out of time to finish it off.
I'll do it myself in future I think.
