The direction to this problem you have Mr Snod, seems to me is that the machine to do the trip won't be at the lower end of the availability....a cb 125??
Find a litre class bike that has luggage ...simple, then ride it on the trip, have fun knowing it will have plenty of reliability in mechanical and performance.,...buy it well ..have the trip and sell the beast on returning home for same.
To buggery with the fuel cost I say, how often do you get away then ?.

I don't see why it's such a bargain, there are plenty of 600 Diversions about at a similar price and mostly with less miles on, like
this or
this or
this.
I know owners rave about the comfort and the broad power range, but they also seem to sell them on quite quickly? Perhaps if one pops up nearby with luggage it'll be worth a look, to be honest I ignore most of them, they leave me half asleep (same with most inline 4s) but they're certainly well proven. Rear disc and 17" front wheel means I'm not dribbling all over my keyboard though.
I'm so sorry for offering an alternative opinion, now where are those wasps

If it's not made in China, it's a fake!

My Uruguayan friend Ernesto traveled Australia on a Kimco 125, he did 18000k's, this sound like the bike for you

Yes,Rod,an interesting fellow in the positive sense...that reminds me of my working holiday around Australia in the middle ninety s...the vast distances to be travelled without any assistance,..I was amazed to see two well fed Asian fellows on new Honda XL 185 trailies going the other way .ALL kitted up.....about 90 Kay's FROM fuel .. with something like 400 Kay's to the next fuel availability....NOTHING but desert between.
Often wondered what happened to them.
