Stalls going into gear
My 1996 TRX stalls when i put it into 1st gear when it is cold,this has never happened on any other bikes I have had.Living in Oz it is warm all year round so bike isn't really that cold,I use Yamalube and selecting first after warm up is no prob.Am i just impatient to get going or do they all do this.Thx in advance for any replies and good luck with your weather over there now.

Who and where are you.
 
Do you mean stalls when you select 1st with the clutch still in, or stalls when you release the clutch to move off?
Does it sit and warm up running on choke, or do you have to coerce it to run?
Have you any carb mods?

Stu ask all the right Qs, however....
I had a CDI wich would drop in revs when put in first with clutch in....never found what the ell...
After doing the CDI mod it never did it again....

Sticky clutch and a loosish ( sic ) drive chain may cause a stall cold.
Perhaps check chain tension and pump the clutch first before holding the front brake when selecting first

Your side stand is down,..the (stand down switch) is cutting the ignition when you select first gear to move off....Maybe.!

Is the clutch adjusted properly, i.e. not too much free play? Otherwise;
I have a Kawasaki KLR 650 that does the same thing (a known issue). It's caused by the clutch plates compressing and sticking together when the bike's been sitting for awhile, not an issue once it's warmed up.
The fix is - Before (cold) starting, put in gear, hold in the clutch lever and rock the bike back and forwards a few times until the clutch plates let go. Then start as normal.
I tend to do this routinely now on all my bikes, it makes for a much gentler change into first on the first gear selection of the day.

Going into first from neutral is quite a harrowing experience on a TRX, even after just sitting at some lights for a few seconds and then quickly pulling the clutch and going for it.. A massive bang every time. For the first one before moving off I usually pull the clutch in for 3-4 seconds and maybe rev it to 3K RPM in blips, this is usually enough to get the oil to be spun out/away from the plates enough that they aren't quite so stuck together. It has never been strong enough to stall the bike though!
