Tank leaking fuel when off the bike

Post by Thom » Wed Aug 17, 2011 8:04 pm

Hi guys, my tank has always dribbled fuel whilst off the bike, regardless of what postiion its in.

If on reserve or on it still dribbles and tonight it is flowing so ive had to drain the tank.

I tried to cover the vacuum port on the tap with my finger and it made no difference to the flow of fuel - i assumed it should have cut the fuel flow?

So do i need to source a fuel tap repair kit for the TRX850 (i tried an xj600 one but all seals were too small) or is there something im missing?

Does anyone know where i can get the repair kit i might need or have a part number?

Cheers

Thom

sounds like the vacuum diaphragm has a perforation.
check for fuel residue on the vac side of the tap.
perhaps oem for the tap kit. or if you can get the part number, try sportsplaza in the states.
cheers

cheers mate, i had thought the diaphragm may be holed but i cant see anything, however it does look very... original and has lots of white powdering on bth sides, perhaps fuel?

anyway ive ordered a new kit from wemoto and hopefully this should solve the issue!

i think ive discovered a problem which could have been why the tank was leaking fuel... there seems to be a fuel leak around one of the five screws on the back of the fuel tap, the new seal kit didnt resolve my problem.

Looks like a new fuel tap is in order *Cries!*

Weird! Must be a hairline crack in the fuel tap body, perhaps where the thread for the screw is located. :?

Hi thom I have been reading a lot about fuel tap problems on here I too have had problems I even bought a new tap from fowlers. So I have my old tap to bits to see what has gone wrong, a lot of advice on diaphragms failing mine seemed to be ok but what I did find where the Oring seats in the fuel tap body was corroded also some residue on the Oring

I gave the tap body where the Oring sits a clean.

Put it back together and it seems to be sorted gonna leave it over night. :D

Ahaaa, good images and YES an o-ring seating against that corrosion would likely not seal. The o-ring cannot be under much compression down in there.
I`ve never had the fuel tap off mine so seeing inside one is interesting, especially seeing where corrosion could be the culprit for developing a leak.

Malham, Yorkshire for two days followed by a mini tour of the lakes with the lassy. should be a goodun!

I had a good GOOD inspection of the tap last night before bed and it didnt appear to have dirty seals, but what i did notice when blowing through it was that there is a small drilled hole in the plastic plate that sits inside the tap, i can only assume this allows fuel to drain away should it get behind the diaphragm, but ive no idea how it would!

Anyway i think this could have been whats been leaking - if so why?

Do a search for my tap mod its very simple and works 100% no more vac tap needed and no more dribbles.
My bike maybe a dinosaur but it still has some bite & has a mighty roar.

All sorted now, tap modded to work without vacuum all hoses blocked off where required and everything back together.

My carbs continued to leak as before so i adjusted the float heights now that the tap had stopped leaking and all appears well!

How 'bout a link to your mod - a search for "fuel tap mod" did not bring the hoped for result ...

Thanks!

Resultless greetings from Munich!
