The pistons can be freely moved by hand. I made a point of checking that, as that was the main sign that the seals had gone in my old calipers.

They dont leak either! :)

Another problem if they are not releasing could be a small amount of air still lurking in the caliper that expands when hot.

Or... doh... have you checked the master cylinder? Does the plunger (piston) return freely?

The master cylinder has been overhauled recently and is OK, but your point about the air being trapped in the caliper is a good one...and certainly one that I haven't thought of. Cheers! :thumbright:

Air in the system is often overlooked or not noticed, especially if you have braided hoses. Be prepared to pump a load of fluid through the system to get rid of it though.

That's the weird thing, though. They've been bled to death! Even given that I've probably cleared the whole of the Isle of Man of its supply of DOT4(!), I may give that a go again too. Thanks.

I had major problems bleeding the front brakes after fitting braided hoses and a caliper stripp down could not get the air out , bought a vacuum bleeder from Hien Gerike (about £35) bleed all the air out in minutes brakes, with double HH EBC's now much better.

I noticed a mention of Brembo being owned by Yamaha and as the Japan market bikes had Brembo's where they any better/ different ? :?:

Brembos marginally better than the UK spec calipers (but blue spots are the way to go)

Marginally?

Slap a brembo radial pump on there and "magically" would be the word!

Air problems can often be solved by magic... well, overnight anyway !

Try using a bungee or cable-tie to hold the lever back against the twistgrip overnight. I know it shouldn't work - but it did for me and transformed a nasty spongy brake back to a nice hard squeeze...
