Can anyone decode an engine number?

I've picked up a new engine for my TRX, but I've got no idea how old it is, is it possible to date it from the engine number?
It's a gold engine, which I haven't seen before...
Thanks in advance!

Did you say gold?
Isn't it painted by a previous owner?
As long as I know, Yamaha didn't make them in gold color.

Gold, yes. (I was going to make an Austin Powers Goldmember joke, but you're from the Netherlands, so I thought I'd better not!

)
Hmmm.... It looks anodised rather than painted, which wouldn't be a backyard job....
Are the serial numbers on the engines sequential? My old one, a 97, is something like 4NX0000316, this one is 4NX0012XXX (or similar...)

Why so?

Dr. Evil: [comes over to Goldmember] How 'bout no, you crazy Dutch bastard?
Ah, I remember now.

And the other one:
"There's only two things I can't stand: people who are intolerant of other peoples cultures & the Dutch!"
Tongue in cheek of course, I have some Dutch heritage myself.
Yes, I think email Yamaha might be the best way, wish me luck.

Just heard back from Yamaha, they do have good customer service!
It's a '97 model, so no older than my old engine.
