camchain/valve noise and electrical issue

Hi, I have had my TRX for six months and have been tidying it up. My last task was to address the whining third gear issue. I stripped the engine and found third gear had an obvious amount of side play, which I minimised by adding a side shim (0.013") behind a thrust washer. The bearings , gear teeth, dogs, etc were in brilliant order. I have just taken the bike for a blast and guess what, no change in third gear whine......but who cares, thats character, and I know the thing is fine.....the problem now is that the valve gear, or timing chain makes a rustling sound that it didnt seem to make before. I have checked the valve clearances and they are spot on, the timing chain adjuster is in perfect condition.....one anomally I found, when setting the cam timing was that the closest I could get the hozontal lines on the sprockets to be parallel with the head gasket face was for the exhaust sprocket to be about a third of third of a tooth retarded to crankshaft TDC and the inlet cam sprocket to be a third of a tooth advanced. The engine performs fine though.......and the final little problem, on the test ride, was that the bike completely cut out when pulling to a stop at an intersection. No power what ever. five minutes later I turned the key and I had power again, then started the bike and was off. The indicators run faster when revving up the motor now, which they didnt before. I shall check the regulator and connections. Any suggestions to the valve or cam chain noises? Do trx's tend to be a little noisy (which I would expect a little rustling fron the cams) in this area? Am I on the right track regarding the electrical issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

an update with the electrical problem. I tested the regulator and it works well but I found that a cluster of bayonet fittings, connecting the regulator it to the loom, were shonky. One fell apart when I unravelled the tape surrounding it and two were loose. That should fix the sudden electrical failure I experienced today........The turn signal light fluctuation may have another cause, possibly a faulty flasher unit.................as for the tappet noise, which Im sure is only valve noise, I am yet to solve. I havent heard another TRX running to form a comparison (Im a little embarrassed to admit that perhaps a condition I had for the last five months where one ear felt like it had water in it and which has cleared up over the last week, may account for an increased ability to hear and therefore for me to preceive my bikes more agricultural machinery sounds.......hope so......just sounds too easy an explanation).

huh, the hearing doubts were too easy an explanation....... the valve noise cleared up after I replaced the camchain. The exhaust sprocket markings now match the head gasket face and the inlet sprocket is slightly retarded. The slightly retarded inlet sprocket seems to be the normal pattern. The absence of noise I attribute to the inlet sprocket now not being advanced a third of a tooth when I tride to position both sprockets closest to standard orientation. The chain that I replaced was not exceedingly stetched and could have gone twice the distance (80000km)......oh heck, what am I going to tell my beloved after assuring her that my lack of conversation was due to my crap hearing ..... but my bike goes.

your bike goes, the universe is now back in balance as for your wife she's only a tap on the shoulder away from what comes naturally
