I have a manual - it just shows two different coils and doesn't really show clearly which is left or right

Can someone please take a look at a bike and tell me I would like to fire it up today :-)

Thanks

Im not sure it matters which way round they are. A lot of bikes work on a lost spark (where the plug still sparks on the exhaust stroke). The Japanese are pretty good at making looms where you can't really connect them up wrong IMO. I just put a new loom on my trx and didn't even notice the different colours on the coil wires, so I either got them right out of luck or it doesn't matter. I would say just connect them up and see what happens (it should either run or not).

Even if it runs on wasted spark it would be in a really weird place with 270 degree crank

I have a very small battery and was concerned if I was trying to churn it over with the plugs the wrong way around it would kill it.

I tried to start it - nothing.

Switch the plug leads and BAM

Boy is it LOUD!

Good job it's on a Q plate as it wouldn't have a chance if it was being compared to a standard system at MOT time.

Orange on the left I think.

I'll have to go and look :-)

Does anyone know if "Orange on the left" is indeed correct and by left that means the cylinder on the side with the generator (left while sat on the bike)?
I have just started putting my TRX back together from a 100% strip-down and I want to connect everything correctly as I go because by the time I get to the starting it up phase in several months I will have forgotten that I took a punt on which coil wire goes where and be left scratching my head for days. Especially if I check them and find a spark present.

I am also slightly confused by the picture in the Haynes manual that shows the coil mounted on the outside of the bracket but the design of the bracket looks like it should be mounted on the inside. Anyone know which is correct off the top of their head?

Coils mount on the outside of the bracket. While you're in the area, check the mounting tabs for cracks. Of the four tabs on mine, three were cracked part of the way through, and one had gone completely. The coil was hanging on by a thread. I reckon the bike was about 20 miles away from becoming a TRX425 single. Easy enough to weld back on, but worth checking.

Cheers for the pointer on the brackets. It's just been powder coated so unfortunately wouldn't be able to see anything at the moment but will know to check later on.

Here goes - this is what my #1 coil bracket looked like - also shows that the orange wire is to the l/h coil:

This is now all cleaned up and rewelded, and repainted. Well, I say 'welded'. What I actually mean is that I pointed the MIG in vaguely the right direction, and covered it in blobs until it kind of stuck in the right place. I'm not a naturally gifted welder.
