Cam chain & Valve chaeck

Hi, Me Again (bloody newbies always asking questions!). I have just bought the TRX of Flea Bay for £900 (fair nick for the year and all consumables in good order). My question this time is, on a 30,000 mile motor would you recommend a cam chain and tensioner and chain guides change (or a combination of the 3). The guy I bought it from had it for 6 years and did about 1500 miles a year,said he changed the oil and filter regularly 1500 for oil and 3000 for filter. Also would you recommend a valve clearance check?

The motor starts easily from cold, settles down to a steady tick over both cold and hot and is on remus cans and K&N filters (no air box).

The motor sounds what best can be described as "loose" (read a bit tractor like) but seems to pull cleanly.

If you did recommend any new parts, Cam chain, tensioner etc can anyone give me some advise on carrying out the work (tips tricks things to watch out for etc)

Hi Anthud.
I believe Yamaha recommend valve clearance checks at 26,000 and a new camchain plus tensioner and guides check(replace if necessary) would be wise.

at that mileage i would certainly check the valve clearance and be aware that you might find some tight ones on the inlet side ,, while your in there have a look to see if you can get the valve timing marks to line up ,,now be careful that you get the correct mark on the crankshaft left side inspection hole lined up dead on, when it is you may find the valve timing marks don't line up , they will be retarded a bit , this points to cam chain stretch and its your call if you want to change the bits ,, mine was like this i changed the cam chain but the guides and tensioner were OK , if you do need a new chain b&c express or Yamaha they are the same and are £70 from Yamaha and i think £45 from b&c,, have a search round its all been done before ,,,good luck :D :D :D and if you are doing the work yourself get a calibrated torque wrench for the cam cap bolts they are a bit touchy and if its using oil you might want to take the head off and change the valve stem seals it just depends on how far you want to go and how much money you want to spend !!!

Cheers for the help all. Ahthud is a name I got given to me by a buddy of mine who goes rock climbing with me. He's seen me take a couple of ground falls and says thats all he can here as I fall!!!!!!!!!!!
