Righty ho, Lubing/adjusting the chain this am and noticed a few rollers were easily movable by the tip of the oilcan, when i say movable i dont just mean they rotated they moved/wobbled as if the pin is worn, unsure of the chains age as it was on when i got trixy but it's a DID and still sort of goldish and has always been kept oily by myself over the 2yrs i've had the trx, also the front sprock is looking due for a swap by all accounts so before a roller gives way i'm ditching it.

So we finally get the main Q, SSS chains any good? they're a HD gold x ring job used & developed by Team Yamaha's UK superbike & MX teams (no doubt they chuck em after a race anyhow) but 80 squids delivered with JT sprox, asked about them doing a 17/42 combo while i was at it.

I had a SSS chain and it was cheap shit. Race teams aren't really a good recommendation as they tend to change the chain and sprockets so frequently.

i have always stuck with D.I.D as every time i try something else it goes pear shaped

Heh, Youngy you pretty much said what i thought but how strong is a cheap chain? how long will it last? if it lasts 2yrs then in my book that might do as i'm likely to change the rear rubber every couple of yrs or less.

The current chain is a DID but i'm not impressed tbh, i've kept it oily but to see a few rollers wobbling about that didnt impress me for what is probably a 3yr old chain
thats done less than 8000 miles or am i expecting too much from a chain

I know we get what we pay for but thought i'd ask about these anyhow, so excluding the SSS and DID that leaves me with what Tsubaki ive seen and iris!?
any others I should be looking at?

Oh and the bunch on evilbay said Yep no problemmo to 17/42 combo no xtra ££'s either so may look see what other chains they do - onlineoffroad is their name

Tsubaki and EK are ok.

My concern of a cheap chain is if it breaks it can wreck your arse and the engine cases.

To allay any fears and the "i told you so" brigade i have a DID VM2 and sprox heading my way, had to get a new rivetter too as the previous
one has gone into hiding or dissapeared through lack of use so hopefully this time tomorrow all should be done

This DID better damn well last more than a couple of years though or next time i may just try a cheaper one and see how it stands up.

Originally had a DID on it when I bought it, but ever since have been putting on RK chains.
Tried:
525 ROZ1 - they didn't last long, and are no longer in RK's cattledog
525 GWX? - similarly didn't last too long
525 XSO - cheaper chain, on my second one and both have lasted 2 years ea.

Both EK and DID are available here in Oz, but most bike shops stock RK
