Corroded unobtanium pipes...??

I'm only slightly p!ssed that someone once commented that my downpipes were 'rusty', and had a wee poke at me for not cleaning the bike. Focket I say and ride the bike

It's a full Akra, and it was once nice and shiny but then I fitted iron discs and ever since they've looked - well - rusty!, but I
did have a go at cleaning them and bloody hell it was hard! I tried some scotchbrite which just skated over the brown stuff, then I used some P1000 wet and dry lubed with WD40 which kinda worked, but took about 10 mins to do a couple of square inches, but left it almost at a mirror polish!
Anyway - has anyone else come up against this problem..? Is there an answer?

1 - clean them regularly so they don't get scabby.
2 - failing 1 above, use a polishing mop on an electric drill.

hi-temp acrylic engine paint should be slightly harder wearing
the BBQ stuff seems to just disappear off headers
